Following the soft launch of 4G LTE services in December last year, Reliance Jio introduced a preview offer where RIL employees could invite their family and friends to try out the network. Later on, the company also opened its network for everyone, albeit a small caveat – users were required to purchase a LYF-branded handset to get a Jio 4G LTE enabled SIM card, which was locked down to the handset’s IMEI number. Now, ahead of the rumored launch on August 15, the company has reportedly unlocked the SIM cards – meaning you can now use it on any 4G LTE enabled device.
Some publications are reporting that Reliance Jio has unlocked the SIM cards and it seems to be working on other 4G LTE smartphones. However, in our experience and those of a few others, it does not seem to be working for all. We tried the Jio SIM card that came with our LYF Flame 1 device on the Redmi 3s Prime and iPhone SE. While we could get the network on the Redmi 3s Prime, we weren’t able to use the mobile data service due to low balance. Also, we were not able to recharge our Jio number. We also tried inserting the SIM card on Apple iPhone SE, but it was unable to catch the network.
