Babar Hayat will take over as Hong Kong captain from Tanwir Afzal for the upcoming tour of Ireland and Scotland. The latter led the team in the T20 WC in India earlier this year but stepped down to focus on his game.
Hong Kong cricket have also named a 14-member squad for the two tours with Aizaz Khan named as vice-captain.
"I am honoured and extremely proud to be named captain of Hong Kong," Hayat said on Thursday (August 11). "I must thank Tanwir for his efforts - the team has come a long way since he took over the captaincy and I'm sure I'll be using his experience on the field. We have some exciting new faces for the upcoming tour, which will be a test in Ireland and Scotland's home conditions."
Hayat has played seven One-Day Internationals and 20 Twenty20 Internationals so far since his debut in 2014. Charlie Burke, the Hong Kong Cricket Association's director of cricket, hoped Hayat's determination will take the team forward.
"Babar thoroughly deserves this opportunity," Burke said. "His fitness and his determination to take this team and Hong Kong cricket forward really excites me. He has led from the front in training and shown he is ready for a leadership role."
Hong Kong will take on Ireland in two T20Is on September 5 and 7 before travelling to Scotland to play two ODIs from September 8.
