Media tycoon and Essel Group chairman Subhash Chandra’s ambitious English news channel WION (World Is One News) is all set to begin its journey from 15 August, when the country celebrates its 70th Independence Day.
The channel, which is in test mode currently, is headed by Rohit Gandhi. It will report global news and issues from a South Asian lens.
WION will be initially launched in India and subsequently roll out in other markets.
WION had received its broadcasting licence from the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (MIB) on 9 February.
With WION, Zee Media plans to highlight the huge potential of the SAARC region to the world and to become the one-stop destination for news in the region.
WION will be a mobile/digital-first platform with its newsgathering teams across the globe equipped with mobile technology for an ‘anytime, anywhere’ live approach to satisfy the ‘news as it happens’ need of Generation Z.
The company has created a content synergy where news from one platform is deployed to other platforms with the necessary modification to suit the platform and the target audience.
WION has been in the works for more than a year now. Chandra had announced his intention to launch an English news channel in August last year. Gandhi, who has worked with organisations like CNN and CBC, was appointed in August 2015.
WION is already active on the digital medium with wionews.com. The website has sections like South Asia, world, business, sports, technology, opinion and so on. Most of the stories on the website are from syndicated feeds.
Besides the regular updates on its Twitter and Facebook pages, WION is populating videos on its YouTube channel. It has also posted exclusive stories by WION reporters on the channel.
On the channel’s official website, Gandhi describes WION as a channel that “goes beyond reporting the banal”.
“We examine global events as they happen, but also push beyond to understand why they do. We trespass the borders that news organisations have operated within for the last three decades—serving the people of the country, the state, or the region where they are located. We look at the world as one, which is why our name is WION: World Is One News,” Gandhi declares.
WION, Gandhi says, will be a multi-platform news network that will stand by the oppressed.
“We have built a multiplatform, global English news network for you. We are digital-first, so catch us on your mobile phone, on the web, on internet radio, and on your television screen. What binds our journalism together is the common thread of global news neutrality. We do not report just for the powerful, the dictators of the world. We stand by the oppressed, and the marginalised,” he adds.
WION will be launched by Zee Media Corporation, a publicly listed company that runs a network of 10 Hindi and regional-language news channels in the country.
