Akshay Kumar’s Rustom is going strong at the box office, repeating the success story we have already seen with the actor’s Airlift and Housefull 3. Trade analysts are already predicting a Rs 100 crore box office collection for the court-room drama even though it has only been on BO for two days.
On day one after release, Rustom made Rs 14.11 crore at the box office, making it the fourth biggest opener of 2016. Day two, being a Saturday, the film is expected to ramp up its earnings and post around Rs 15-20 crore in ticket sales.
Trade analyst Taran Adarsh wrote, “#Rustom starts with a bang… Leads by a big margin… Emerges 4th highest opener of 2016… Fri ₹ 14.11 cr. India biz.” The film is doing well in the Middle East too. “#Rustom is OUTSTANDING in UAE-GCC… Thu AED 1 million, Fri AED 1.3 million. Total: AED 2.3 million [₹ 4.19 cr].”
Akshay Kumar is having a great year. Among the top five openers of the year, two belong to Akshay himself. While his Housefull 3 earned Rs 15.21 crore on day 1, Airlift’s tally was 12.35 crore. Both went on to do over Rs 100 crore business.
Rustom is directed by Tinu Suresh Desai and also stars Ileana D’Cruz and Esha Gupta. Akshay plays a naval commander in the film who is accused of killing his wife’s lover. The film is inspired by KM Nanavati murder case which shook India in the 50s and changed the Indian judicial system. Rustom was released on August 12 on 2,317 screens in India and 550-plus overseas.
