Mumbai: Sony Wah, the newly launched free-to-air (FTA) channel from Sony Pictures Networks India (SPNI), is scripting a success story in the Hindi movie genre.
The channel overtook biggies like Zee Cinema and Star Gold to become the No. 2 channel in the genre, according to BARC data for the period ended 19 August. The channel had climbed to the third number spot in the previous week.
Sony’s flagship Hindi movie channel Sony Max reigned at the top. All the top five channels in the genre saw a huge increase in viewership.
Sony Wah’s rise pushed Zee Cinema to the third position. Star Gold and Rishtey Cineplex did not see any change in their rankings.
Top movies
Max had three of its movie screenings in the top five. Zee Cinema’s airing of ‘Baaghi’, however, was the most-watched movie of the week.
‘Kanchana 2’, shown on Max, was the second-rated film.
‘Sholay’, which had aired on Star Gold on 15 August, was at the third spot. ‘Kanchana’ and ‘Baahubali’ were at the fourth and fifth positions respectively.
Hindi GECs in Urban+Rural HSM
The Hindi GEC genre did not witness any big movement during the week, as there was no change in the urban and rural Hindi-speaking markets (HSM) combine.
Star Plus reigned at the top while free-to-air (FTA) sibling channel Star Utsav stood at the second spot. Zee TV was third-ranked, followed by Colors.
Top 5 shows in Urban+Rural HSM
Sony Entertainment Television’s (SET) ‘The Kapil Sharma Show’ and Star Plus’ ‘Dance+ 2’ entered the list of the top five shows for urban + rural HSMs.
The top-rated show, however, was Zee TV’s ‘Kumkum Bhagya’. The second spot was also taken by another Zee TV show, ‘Brahmarakshas-Jaag Utha Shaitan’.
Top Hindi GECs in Urban HSM
In urban HSM, SET moved up to the fifth position, pushing Life OK to the sixth position.
The other positions remained the same. Star Plus continued to be the No.1 channel, followed by Colors at No. 2 and Zee TV at No. 3.

‘Kumkum Bhagya’ was the top show in the urban HSM, followed by ‘Brahmarakshas: Jaag Utha Shaitaan’, ‘The Kapil Sharma Show’, ‘Dance+ 2’ and ‘Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah’.
Rural HSM
In rural HSM, Rishtey moved to the fifth position, pushing Star Plus to the sixth spot. SAB TV conceded the 10th position to Big Magic.
Star Utsav continued to rule while Zee Anmol was at No. 2 and Sony Pal at No. 3. All the top three channels were FTAs. Zee TV was at No. 4.
