Australia smashed record books when they scored a mammoth 263 runs against Sri Lanka in the first T20I at Pallekela. Glenn Maxwell stole the show with a whirlwind 145 and the right-hander powered the visitors to the best ever total by a team in the format. Previous best was Sri Lanka’s 260 in 2007.
Australia’s record total comes a week after West Indies came close when they managed 245 against India in the first T20I in Florida. Australia’s previous best was 248 against England in 2013 at Southampton.
Maxwell fired on all cylinders as he smashed as many as nine sixes during his hundred and put on 109 with Travis Head for the third wicket. All the hosts bowlers were dispatched to all parts and Kasun Rajitha, with figures of 0/46 in the three overs at an economy rate of 15.33, was the most expensive bowler of the night.
