Nokia-branded Android Smartphones, Tablets To Launch in Q4 2016; report

Nokia has seen its share of ups and downs. The company was once among the biggest brands on the planet. However, it could not keep up the pace with the changing face of the smartphone industry, and lost its position to the likes of Apple and Samsung. It even came to a point where the company had to sell its phone business to Microsoft in 2014. Now, the company has reportedly confirmed that it will be making a comeback by launching Android-powered smartphones and tablets in the fourth quarter of 2016.
According to a report by Chinese news firm The Paper, the Nokia China President Mike Wang has confirmed that there will be three to four Nokia-branded devices that will be launched in the fourth quarter of this year. These devices will include both smartphones and tablets.
Under the deal between Microsoft and Nokia, the latter was restricted from launching devices under its brand name till the last quarter of 2016. It seems as if Nokia is extremely keen to re-enter its lost territory.
It should be noted that these devices will not be manufactured at the plants where Nokia's earlier smartphones were manufactured, and as per the company's brand licensing deal, the products will be manufactured by Finnish company HMD Global. Nokia, earlier this year, had granted HMD Global the exclusive license to create Nokia-branded mobile phones and tablets for the next 10 years.
In July, rumours suggested that two Nokia-branded Android phones made by Finland's HMD Global might be soon making their way to the market. The leaks suggested that the 5.2-inch and 5.5-inch phones will sport 2K resolution (QHD) displays and will come with IP68 certification, which effectively means they will be highly resistant to water and dust on the similar lines to phones like the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge and Galaxy S7.
Further ex-Nokia and Rovio employee Pekka Rantala joined HMD as a chief marketing officer recently, which might suggest that the company is showing seriousness towards the comeback.
It would be interesting to see how Nokia's brand name fares with collaboration with Android and whether the company, which was once considered the benchmark for hardware on cellphones, is able to recapture its lost charm.

Tata Sky Becomes First Indian Dth Oprator to Launch +1 feeds of popular HD channels

TataSky the pioneer in innovation in the Indian DTH sector has once again bagged the credit for becoming the industry’s first operator to launch +1 feeds of popular HD entertainment channels. This is a one hour time shift feed which is broadcasted from TataSky’s end which ensures that all shows on those channels are aired one hour later than its original airing time.

With this service TataSky has aims to address the issues faced by subscribers who do not possess PVR set top boxes with built in recording feature and may have to miss one of their two favourite TV shows airing on separate channels at the same prime time slot. Also for the broadcasters of the channels this spells good news since it increases the TRP of their prime time shows which would otherwise suffer due to clashing times with other channel’s popular shows in the same time slot.

As of now TataSky has launched the +1 service only for 3 popular Hindi entertainment channels Sony HD, Zee Tv HD and Colors HD. The channel locations of the +1 service channels are Sony HD +1 on 129, Zee Tv HD +1 on 142 and Colors HD +1 on 148. Interestingly TataSky has not launched the +1 service for Star Plus HD which is also a popular Hindi entertainment channel, but we may see that being added in the future.

Other recent developments:

TataSky has launched 2 new channels on its platform. WION which is an English news channel has been added on channel number 628 with an a-la carte price of Rs.10 and Colors SUPER which is a Kannada regional channel has been added on channel number 1633 with an a-la carte price of Rs.13 for a 30 day subscription.

Next IPhone To Support 256 GB Storage Variant; Report

Apple's next-generation iPhone devices may not have received a launch date but this hasn't stopped leaks around the devices. The latest rumour claims that the new iPhone models may sport 256GB of storage.
The new details come from Taiwan citing 'industry sources' that claim NAND flash vendors including Samsung as well as SK Hynix have raised chip prices because of high demand for new smartphone including the iPhone 7. Digitimes reports that NAND chip prices will "keep soaring until the fourth quarter of 2016."
The report adds that Apple's purchase of NAND flash is "critical to the overall consumption", pointing to how the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6s series consumed 15 percent of entire NAND supply last year.
(Also see: iPhone 7 Price, Release Date, Specifications, and All Other Rumours)
Unfortunately, there's no word whether the 256GB storage will be limited to one model or will be used on both rumoured iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus smartphones. Previously, Apple was rumoured to finally be doing away with the 16GB base storage variant, and replacing it with a 32GB option. The company was also rumoured to be ditching the 64GB model altogether, and replacing it with a 128GB variant. The first rumours of a 256GB variant appeared shortly before this, with later reports tipping both the iPhone 7 and larger iPhone 7 Plus will come this variant.
A separate report from Japan suggests that Apple this year will unveil just two models - iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus - contradicting earlier reports that said a possible iPhone 7 Pro model also exists. Apple was recently reported to launch three variants in 2016 namely iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, and the iPhone 7 Pro/ Plus/ Premium. However, the latest leak declines any such possibility. Of course, one cannot (Because of so few design changes, there is a rumour that Apple will calle the next iPhone the iPhone 6SE.) ignore the rumour the Apple may choose to call its next iPhone model the iPhone 6SE - due to the minimal design changes the generation is bringing.
Recent reports also suggested that Apple may start selling the next iPhone in the week of September 12. Prolific tipster @evleaks had previously claimed that the next iPhone will hit store shelves on September 16 specifically

A recent change to the Chrome Dev build on Android could indicate a new feature coming to the browser soon. Android Police points out that users are seeing a Google Now-powered content list on their devices, and I was able to pull it up easily after installing the test version of the app on my device. Google Reader it isn't, but it does bring the personalized suggestions closer to people who might not open the Search bar as often as their browser.

Even without installing a developer build, you could see the "Articles for you" but typing in Chrome://flags and trying to switch "Show content snippets on the New Tab Page" to enabled. That worked for me in the beta and regular versions on Android, although there's no indication when Google may make it the default for everyone -- just a hint towards a future where your phone knows what you want without needing to be asked.

PEMRA to issue DTH licences as from October

$

The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) will begin with the issuing of licences to companies in the country as from the month of October, for establishing and operating direct-to-home (DTH) services.

The supply of licenses would further enhance the national language and culture and the services of all illicit Indian DTH accessible in Pakistan would end. The procedures followed by PEMRA, guarantee the transparency of the organisation and any decisions ordered by the court are respected.

Absar Alam, the chairman at PEMRA, commented about the announcement: “PEMRA and media were important for each other. Everyone wanted an independent PEMRA along with free media, which could only be possible when the media would respect the decisions of PEMRA. In developed countries, the media was free but it showed responsibility”.

He further added that: “People in remote areas would be benefitted from DTH services, which would also help improve the standard of programmes telecast by the electronic media”.

To recall, DTH, being a digital satellite service, provides television viewing services directly to subscribers through satellite transmission in the country. Signals are received directly from satellite and are digital by nature with better quality (than analogue ones) in all features.

Windows 10 update in 2017 will bring Holographic support for all PCs

Intel and Microsoft have collaborated on a specification for mixed-reality ready PCs and head mounted displays (HMDs). Microsoft is planning to launch an update to Windows 10 in 2017 that will enable mainstream PCs to run Windows Holographic shell, and the mixed reality applications that are associated with it. Windows Holographic shell will give a user a new experience of multi-tasking in mixed reality, which will blend 2D and 3D apps.
In a blog post, Terry Myerson, Executive Vice President, Windows and Devices Group said, “Our shared goal is to enable our hardware partners to build a broad range of devices for the mainstream consumer and business markets. We are working with several partners on the spec today, and plan to publicly release v1 of the spec at the Windows Hardware Engineering Community (WinHEC) conference in Shenzhen in December.”

In a video shared on the blog shows a user is seen wearing a tethered Holographic headset, that makes it look like she is in a virtual room, with virtual walls and a virtual dog. All the applications and browsers she has opened are suspended on virtual screens in front. She is able to access her email on a large virtual screen, through which she opens her calendar on another screen -while the virtual dog licks his paw in the background. The user is then able to access the ‘Holo Tour’, instantly transporting her to a 360 degree view of Pantheon, Rome. A voice assistant then helps give her details about the Pantheon on her virtual tour.

BSNL to install 47 hi-tech wireless stations on Uttarakhand after Chinese

[http://economictimes]Dehradun: Following reports of increased infiltration by Chinese forces in the border areas of Uttarakhand, BSNL has marked 47 zones where security will be stepped up with the installation of base transceiver stations (BTS). These stations facilitate wireless communication between devices using the BSNL network.

All five of the state's districts which border China and Nepal will have such stations, meant exclusively for Border Security Force (BSF) personnel deputed at border posts. Of these five districts — Pithoragarh, Almora, Champawat, Chamoli and Uttarkashi — Dharchula in Pithoragarh will have the majority of mobile towers, as it sees rampant flow of people from Nepal and China, according to BSNL officials here.

"The equipment that will be installed at these 47 stations will be high-tech and will help stop cross-border communications. Even conversations of soldiers will be traced by the base sub-stations," an official said.

BSNL is aiming to start 2G services at these border areas due to difficulty in laying fibre-optic lines for 3G connectivity in these parts, which are covered by snow for most of the year. A senior official in Dehradun BSNL office said, "The sites chosen are extremely close to the border and mostly located on hills. It is being done so that telecommunication of border posts' soldiers remain crystal clear."

BSNL has 1,540 BTS across the state of which majority of them are of 2G. To lift up its 3G services, the department will now install new equipment that will give seamless communication experience to its customers in Uttarakhand. It is for the first time that BSNL in Uttarakhand will provide any such services, according to the senior officials of telecom department.

"The move is part of increased security measures and not for financial benefit. We intend to install solar panels in all those areas where the BTS will be located, in order to ensure that the system continues to work in the absence of electricity," an official said.

Following the latest reports on Chinese infiltration in Champawat, the project is being expedited. Due to involvement of various ministries including home, defence and telecom, BSNL is expecting to get clearance for installation of the stations shortly, according to BSNL chief general manager (CGM) Mahak Singh.

While elaborating on possibility of installing 3G services on the border, the CGM clarified that due to persistent landslides, shoddy road connectivity and unavailability of electricity in most of the border region, initially only 2G facility will be given.
