Two Intelsat satellites with C and Ku-Band transponders set for launch tomorrow

Two Intelsat communications satellites - Intelsat 33e and Intelsat 36 - are being launched into orbit on 24 August, with Arianespace in the final stage of preparations.

This sixth mission of the year will be launched from the Ariane Launch Complex No. 3 (ELA 3) in Kourou, French Guiana, atop an Ariane 5 booster. The launch window starts at 5:55 p.m. EDT (21:55 GMT) and extends for 45 minutes.

The work on the launch started in mid-July with the arrival of the satellites in French Guiana. Intelsat 33e and Intelsat 36 were shipped to the Guiana Space Centre in late July. Both spacecraft were put through a series of tests including electrical checks verifying command and telemetry systems, as well as electrical propulsion tests, validating the Xenon propulsion system. The engineers also performed bi-propellant tests to make sure that each thruster responds correctly to activation commands, and to prove there were no leaks.

With a lifetime of fifteen years, the Intelsat 33e has been built by Boeing and is based on its 702 MP platform. The satellite weighs 6.6 metric tons and measures 7.9 by 3.8 by 3.2 meters. It features two deployable solar wings, each with four panels of ultra-triple-junction gallium arsenide solar cells, capable of generating up to 13 kilowatts of power.

Equipped with 20 C-band and 249 Ku-band transponders, Intelsat 33e will be inserted into a geosynchronous orbit inclined 60 degrees East, replacing Intelsat 904. The satellite is designed to deliver carrier-grade telecom, enterprise networks, aeronautical connectivity, and certain media services.

This is the second spacecraft in the company’s EpicNG series – a high-performance, next-generation satellite platform that delivers global high-throughput technology.

Its Ku-band spot beams are to provide broadband services for Europe, Africa, West Asia, and Asia, while a Ku-band wide beam provides broadcast coverage of Europe, West Asia, and Asia. The satellite’s C-band spot beams will cover high traffic telecommunications centres in Europe, Central Africa, West Asia, Asia, and Australia. When it comes to the C-band wide beam, it is expected to deliver coverage over sub-Saharan Africa for data and media services.

Intelsat 36 with a life of over fifteen years was manufactured by Space Systems/Loral (SSL) and is based on the SSL-1300 bus. Weighing about 3.25 metric tons, its dimensions are 17 by 10 by 11 feet (5.2 by 3.1 by 3.4 meters). The spacecraft has two deployable solar arrays that will generate up to 15.8 kilowatts of power. Intelsat 36 is fitted with 34 Ku-band transponders and 10 C-band transponders. Its Ku-band payload will support Intelsat’s MultiChoice direct-to-home service in South Africa, while the C-band payload is expected to provide in-orbit resilience for the video content distribution neighborhood at 68.5 degrees East where the satellite will be co-located in a geosynchronous orbit, together with Intelsat 20.

The Intelsat 33e satellite was on 6 August mated with the payload adapter in the S5 payload facility and four days later it was encapsulated in the payload fairing. Intelsat 36 was installed on the payload adapter four days later and its encapsulation took place afterwards with the stack was placed atop the Ariane 5 launcher.

The launch rehearsal and final preparations of the booster for the upcoming liftoff were held last week, while the rollout of the rocket to the launch pad was scheduled to be performed one day before the planned blastoff. The final countdown for the liftoff will be commenced 11 hours and 30 minutes ahead of the launch.

Designated VA232 in Arianespace’s numbering system, it will see the Ariane 5 rocket fly for about 42 minutes when Intelsat 33e will be released into orbit first nearly 29 minutes after launch, while Intelsat 36 will separate 13 minutes later.

According to Intelsat Investor Relations Vice President Dianne J. VanBeber, “We take the next step in establishing our Intelsat EpicNG high-throughput platform with Intelsat 33e, the second in our series of seven planned satellites. We also launch Intelsat 36, which is a fully committed custom payload for an important DTH customer in South Africa,”

The Ariane 5 in ECA configuration is the heavy-lift rocket for missions to geostationary transfer orbit (GTO) and usually carries two telecommunications satellite payloads. The flight is powered during the initial flight phase by a cryogenic core stage and two solid rocket boosters, followed by the use of a cryogenic upper stage for orbital injection of the payload.

The 54.8-meter tall ECA is an improved version of the Ariane 5 launcher, designed to deliver payloads, mainly communications satellites, weighing up to 10 tonnes.

Although it has the same general architecture, some significant changes were made to the basic structure of the generic version to increase thrust and enable it to carry heavier payloads. ECA is also used by institutional customers for non-GTO missions; for example, launching ESA’s Herschel and Planck scientific missions in 2008.

This will be the 232nd liftoff of an Ariane vehicle from the Kourou Spaceport. It will be the fourth Ariane 5 launch of 2016 (the 87th Ariane 5 launch overall) and the sixth of 12 flights planned this year by Arianespace, utilizing its family of the heavy-lift Ariane 5, the medium-lift Soyuz, and the lightweight Vega.

Arianespace’s next launch is scheduled for 16 September when it is expected to send into orbit PeruSat 1 for the Peruvian Armed Forces and four SkySat Earth-observing microsatellites for Skybox Imaging. The mission will be performed by the Vega launcher, lifting off from Kourou.

PlayStation Plus Price Hiked; New Features To Follow

Sony has increased the price of PlayStation Plus (PS Plus) in the US and Canada. A yearly subscription will cost you $59.99/ $69.99 CAD while a quarterly subscription will set you back by $24.99/ $29.99 CAD from September 22. The monthly plan of $9.99 remains the same in the US while Canadians will have to pay $11.99 CAD.
PS3 and PS4 owners looking to play online multiplayer games such as Overwatch or Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 require PS Plus subscription in order to do so. This comes a couple of weeks before the company's September 7 event in New York City that's anticipated to see the launch of the PS4 Neo, and perhaps was done to avoid negative publicity close to the big day.
"This marks the first time that PS Plus membership prices will increase in the US and Canada since the launch of the service in 2010. The new pricing reflects the current market conditions while enabling us to continue providing exceptional value to our members. As a member, you will continue to enjoy the benefits and features that enable shared experiences, such as online multiplayer, free games, and exclusive discounts," posted PlayStation Plus Content Partnership Manager Greg Lewickyj. "You will also continue to get exclusive benefits such as online game save storage and discounts across the PlayStation digital services.
If you do not wish to continue your subscription, please be sure to cancel it by turning off auto-renewal in your account settings before September 22, 2016." As for India, a price hike took place last year in line with the rest of Europe. It's unlikely that we'll see a price hike any time soon.
Nonetheless, there's probably more to the price hike than Sony is revealing. Reason being, a few months ago a survey from the company surfaced on popular gaming forum NeoGAF. It hinted at new features for PS Plus.
These include:
Discounts on PS hardware and accessories, (controllers, and headsets)
Monthly PS+ contests with prizes
PS+ knowledge base (Forum for PS+ members)
Discounts on Sony products (TVs, cameras, smartphones)
Discounts on lifestyle products (newspaper subscriptions, movie tickets, fast food, travel fare)
PS+ gaming tournaments with prizes
Free movies every month
Discounts on popular streaming services (Netflix, HBO Nordic, Spotify)

It is possible that Sony is holding back until its September event before announcing which features made the cut if at all.

Xiaomi MIUI 8 Global Stable ROM Is Here; Top 10 Features

Xiaomi first unveiled MIUI 8 in May, and launched the Global ROM in June at an event in New Delhi. After releasing developer previews, the Chinese manufacturer has now started rolling out MIUI 8 Global Stable ROM build for all eligible devices.
The Xiaomi Redmi 1S, Redmi 2, Redmi 2 Prime, Redmi Note 3 Qualcomm, Redmi Note 3 Special Edition, Redmi Note 3G, Redmi Note 4G, Redmi Note 2, Redmi Note Prime, Redmi 3, Redmi 3S, Redmi 3S Prime, Mi 2, Mi 2S, Mi 3, Mi 4, Mi 4i, Mi 5, Mi Note, and Mi Max (32GB variant) are all worthy of an MIUI 8 update.
A few devices will receive the update over-the-air (OTA) gradually over the coming week, while some are set to receive it in the 'near future.' In any case, all eligible devices can install MIUI 8 right now, by following the steps here.
MIUI 8 was unveiled alongside the Xiaomi Mi Max in India, and the company had then promised for the stable build to release in August. Keeping its promise, the MIUI 8 with all of its new features is rolling out, and here is everything new that is arriving with the MIUI 8 Global Stable ROM.
1) Photos
The MIUI 8 brings in a host of new improvements to the Gallery like the introduction of Mi Cloud Photo sync. It keeps low resolution images locally, and uploads the original full size image to the cloud. Xiaomi also tweaked the way panorama shots are seen on the smartphone, and instead of the cropped square version, MIUI 8 displays them horizontally across the screen. It has also introduced a new video editing option where users can trim videos easily and add video effects. MIUI 8 brings quick sharing to the Gallery app, where the user can share a picture on different platforms by just swiping up.
(Also see:Xiaomi India on the Redmi 3s, MIUI 8, and Mi VR India Launch)
2) Quick Ball
The Quick Ball is nothing but a hovering button that stays on the display screen at all times. Users can customise five shortcuts into the ball, and it reminds you very much of Apple's Assistive Touch. The Quick Ball button also shows up on the lock screen, enabling users to use to shortcuts even on a locked smartphone.
3) Dual apps
Dual apps is a very nifty feature as it brings the ability to have two instances of any app running on the smartphone - such as two instances of WhatsApp. This essentially means you can run two separate WhatsApp accounts on one smartphone.
4) Second Space
The Second Space feature lets you do the work of two smartphones on one. It lets you have two Google accounts that you can switch whenever you please. By switching on the Second Space feature, and setting up a new account, users can keep their business and personal accounts separate, but on one smartphone. It allows users to switch between accounts through a Switch app, that shows up once the Second Space feature is enabled.
5) Scrolling screenshots
This should come in really handy for all the screenshot lovers out there. A screenshot is typically restricted to capture what is visible on the screen at that particular time, cropping out all the other content on a webpage. With MIUI 8, an entire webpage, no matter the length can be taken as a screenshot. To use this feature, press the Volume down and the power key at the same time. An animated icon pops up on the top right for five seconds. Click it immediately, and options to expand, edit or share show up. Click on expand, scroll up the space you want to screenshot, and press stop when you're done.
6) Caller ID and Dialler
With MIUI 8, Xiaomi has integrated caller ID into the system, thereby eliminating the need for third-party apps to perform the function. The dialler now lets you type in T9 Hindi directly from the dial pad, and it even enables T9 Business Search. This feature shows contact information of popular businesses around the area, irrespective if the number is stored or not.
7) Calculator
The Calculator app also sees a major redesign. Apart from doing the math, the app now will even convert weight, currency, and temperature.
8) Messages
The caller ID integration expands into text messaging as well. MIUI 8 will detect a message, and if a text arrives from your bank (for example), it will show the name of the bank with a profile photo to make it look prettier. For example, HDFC Bank's SMS won't show up as VM-HDFC, but will instead show up automatically as just HDFC complete with a contact photo icon. The Messages app also introduced third-party integration, which means it will prompt users to do various functions depending on the message. A movie ticket confirmation from BookMyShow will allow users to add a reminder, and a low data alert from a carrier should prompt the user to recharge using one of the installed recharge apps. For this to work, Xiaomi has currently partnered with MobiKwik in India.
9) Notes app
The new Notes app in MIUI 8 sees a slight change in design, and can be seen in a grid format. It has a new Memo template feature that gives you a better design to work with, and even allows you to share on micro-blogging sites as is. It also allows users to set a password, or fingerprint access to a note for better privacy.
10) Ringtones and Themes
Xiaomi has partnered with Hungama to introduce latest soundtracks as ringtones for users. The ringtones will be made available free of cost. The company has also partnered with many other companies to provide many new wallpaper options, and because of its Theme Contest held in India, MIUI 8 will also see many new themes as well.

Three Productions Houses Submit bids for DD slot Auction

$

MUMBAI Biggrinespite relaxing rules, Prasar Bharati has received bids only from three production houses, namely Balaji Telefilms, BAG Films & Media and Keylight Productions, for the DD National programming slots.

“We have received three bids for the slot auctions from Balaji Telefilms, Keylight Productions (Mumbai) and BAG Films,” Doordarshan DG Supriya Sahu told TelevisionPost.com.

Earlier, Prasar Bharati had received interests from seven production houses.

A committee will now scrutinise the bids, following which the eligible bidders will be allowed to participate in the e-auction of slots on 5 September. The final list of qualified bidders will be uploaded on the DD website on 30 August.

The last date for submitting bids was 19 August. The letter of award will be circulated on 9 September. The pre-bid meeting was held on 12 August.

Following the e-auction and the issue of the letter of award, the procedural formalities, agreement and performance bank guarantee will be done on 23 September, while successful production houses will have to launch the programmes from 31 October onwards.

Earlier, the pubcaster had received interests from seven production houses, namely Balaji Telefilms, Contiloe, Cinevistaas, Keylight Productions, Optymistix, Rash Productions and Shakuntalam Telefilms, on DD National slots. That process was cancelled after it became known that several interested production houses were not eligible.

Subsequently, the pubcaster came out with an amended request for proposal (RFP) by relaxing certain norms.

As part of the change in the slot sale policy, Prasar Bharati allowed film production companies to participate in the auction of the primetime slots. Earlier, only TV content producers could bid for the slots.

It also removed the restriction on regional-language programming houses. So, it is not only production houses with experience in Hindi entertainment programming who are eligible to bid, but content houses engaged in other languages can also take primetime slots on Doordarshan.

As per DD’s eligibility criteria, the production house should be an Indian entity incorporated/registered/recognised, as the case may be, under the respective applicable laws and in existence for the last three financial years.

It must have produced at least 200 hours of general entertainment programming (including feature films) in any Indian language telecast in the last three calendar years. Applicants for weekend slots in the genres of reality, games, quiz, etc. should have produced 100 hours of such content that has been telecast in the last three calendar years.

They should have a turnover of at least Rs 3 crore per annum in each of the last three financial years.

Earlier, the minimum hours of content produced to become eligible was 300 hours while the minimum turnover was fixed at Rs 5 crore.

Another important criterion to qualify for bids was that the production house should not have been a defaulter of Doordarshan at the time of submission of the bid. A blacklisting order passed by the Central government/state governments/ any PSU should not be in operation against a bidder at the time of the submission of the qualification bid.

As per the bid document, each slot will be of 30 minutes including up to 24 minutes of programme and free commercial time (FCT) of six minutes. Of the six minutes of FTC, a production house will get four minutes, while two minutes will be retained by DD for promotion of programme or channels, for advertisements of government departments and PSUs and for public service messages.
