No BCCI reforms, no scrutiny of IPL bids: Panel

The Justice Lodha committee put the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on notice on Monday and said it would not scrutinize the global tender for the multi-billion dollar IPL rights unless the board undertook to fully implement Supreme Court-ordered reforms in cricket administration.
The last 10-year IPL rights contract was signed in 2008 and was revised in 2009 for $1.6 billion. The board is expecting to garner $3-4 billion for the next 10 years through the global tender.
After the SC's October 21 order freezing all financial transactions between BCCI and state cricket associations as well as subjecting tenders and contracts to the Lodha committee's prior approval, the board wrote to the panel saying it had already initiated the process for global tender for IPL rights.
According to the October 21st order, BCCI cannot go ahead with the global tender without a green signal from the SC-appointed Lodha committee, which has been tasked with implementing radical reforms in cricket management.
In its letter to the panel, the BCCI said it was bound by the previous IPL rights contract to declare the process for a global tender after the end of the contract in May 2016.
Intimating the board of the Justice Lodha committee's response, its secretary Gopal Shankaranarayanan wrote, "Before the committee proceeds to issue any directions, it would need to satisfy itself that the BCCI administration is willing to comply with the Supreme Court's October 21 order."
The letter was sent to BCCI president Anurag Thakur, secretary Ajay Shirke and CEO Rahul Johri. It said, "As you can understand, this would be necessary in view of the BCCI's stand concerning the earlier order of July 18 (when the court had accepted all reform recommendations of the committee and ordered its implementation).
"In this regard, the committee requires a letter of compliance from president BCCI duly undertaking on behalf of BCCI to unreservedly comply with the Supreme Court's October 21 order."
However, it also asked the BCCI to furnish information regarding the date on which the previous 10-year IPL rights contract came to an end and the date when the con tract period will commence.
On October 21, the SC had ordered the BCCI to complete ly freeze release of funds, even for hosting cricket matches, to its member asso ciations. It had directed the Lodha committee to appoint an independent auditor to scrutinize the board's income and expenses and said all high-value contracts to be awarded by the board would need prior approval from the Lodha panel after scrutiny by the independent auditor.
The SC had asked Thakur and Shirke to appear person ally before the Lodha commit tee, which also comprises former judges Ashok Bhan and R V Raveendran, within three weeks. It had asked both to file personal affidavits before December 3 detailing compliance of the SC's July 18 judgment on reforms.

Rs 4 cr 'misused' in HCA, confirms ACB

The Anti Corruption Bureau has charged Arshad Ayub, the president of Hyderabad Cricket Association, its former president G Vinod and seven other leaders of misusing public money to the tune of more than Rs 4 crore and urged a trial court to try and punish them. The Telangana unit of ACB suggested the officials be tried under the provisions of Prevention of Corruption Act and under other provisions of the Indian Penal Code.
"Since they were entrusted with funds from Sports Authority of AP (SAAP), they fall under the purview of the definition of a public servant and hence can be punished under PC Act," M Mad husudan Reddy, a deputy superintendent of police, who filed the chargesheet said.
Citing the judgement delivered by the Supreme Court, he told the ACB Court there was no need for obtaining sanction from any authority to prosecute the accused. Earlier the court summoned all the accused. On Monday the eight accused officials, most current and former office bearers of HCA, Arshad Ayub, G Vinod, DS Chalapathi, present secretary K John Manoj, former secretary Seshadri Venkateswaran, R Devaraj, former treasurer Naresh Sharma and Kishore Kapoor of Delhi-based Star Mercantile company, appeared before the ACB Court.
Special Judge Victor Immanuel recorded their presence and directed them to appear before the court on November 28 again. The summons sent to another accused MV Sridhar, the former vice president of HCA did not reach him. Hence the court directed the registry to issue summons to him again. The ACB authorities have told the court that they found no evidence or material against another accused called A Yadagiri and urged the court to delete his name from the case.
ACB in its chargesheet told the court it found the accused misused Rs 3.30 crore in the construction of canopy at the north and south stands of Uppal Sports Stadium. They connived with Delhi-based contractor Kishore Kapoor and caused loss to HCA.

Shane Watson, the former Australian allrounder, believes Australian cricketers will be content with a pay cut if it meant a less demanding schedule.
Australia's upcoming hectic workload has been in the spotlight recently after it was revealed the team is set to play a Twenty20 against Sri Lanka in Adelaide next February scheduled the day before the Test side plays in India.
Australia were criticised by some after they opted to send a second-string bowling attack to South Africa during their recent One-Day International tour, which resulted in a humiliating 5-0 loss.
Watson, though, believed players would consider a pay cut. "If it meant there was a bit more life balance playing for Australia, I think whatever is required to actually get that, the players would be open to any of that for sure," he told News Corp on Monday (October 24). "Whatever works to make sure that the product being produced is the most premium product."
Watson, who played 59 Tests from 2005-2015, believed the international calendar was too congested. "There's too much cricket on and my personal belief is some of it is on for the wrong reasons and not for the betterment of cricket," he said. "A lot of it comes down to the money that's generated... and the deals that are done by the cricket boards that if you play games here we can play games at home.
"It needs to be looked at," he added. "As we saw in South Africa, we don't take our best team there thinking we'll be OK and we end up losing 5-0. No one wants that."
James Sutherland, Cricket Australia chief executive, recently said that he hoped there would be less international games next year. But he believed cricketers who chose to play in the Indian Premier League during the off-season shouldn't complain about the workload.

MUMBAI: Viacom18's OTT platform, Voot, will
showcase exclusive content of its reality show
Bigg Boss 10. The on-demand destination has
developed a special space called Unseen Undekha

Sony Six set to air new season of NBA, launches campaign
MUMBAI: Sports channel Sony Six (a part of Sony
Pictures Networks India) is all set to embark on the
new season of the National Basketball Association
(NBA) in India. The best teams from around the
word will be fiercely competing for the coveted
Larry O’Brien NBA Championship Trophy.
The court action for 2016–17 NBA will be telecast
on Sony Six and Sony SIX HD, starting 26 October.
Cleveland Cavaliers, the defending champions, will
begin the first game of the season against New
York Knicks. Some of the most popular teams for
this season include Golden State Warriors, San
Antonio Spurs and Oklahoma City Thunders.
To announce the beginning of the 2016–17 NBA,
Sony Six has launched a campaign on the theme of
‘Superheroes: They are among us’. The campaign
aims to showcase the extraordinary skills of NBA
players. Stephen Curry, LeBron James, James
Harden and Kevin Durant are some of the key
players likened to superheroes who literally defy
gravity every time they step on to the court.
The campaign aims to capture the imagination of a
young audience looking for their athletic heroes in
NBA. The campaign will have a complete 360-
degree rollout across mass media.
The campaign starts with a film that reminisces
about NBA superheroes in different situations,
thereby showcasing the sense of awe and
amazement that NBA players bring to the court.
‘The Museum’: In an expansive hall of a museum,
tourists are seen clicking pictures of an object
encased in a glass with great enthusiasm. It turns
out to be an oversized basketball sneaker, a
reminder of the biggest players of NBA.
‘The Laboratory’: Two scientists talk wondrously
about LeBron James and how he defies all logic and
physics when suspended in mid-air as he heads for
a dunk.
The sports cluster of SPNI has pioneered providing
substantial content in ‘breakfast viewing’. Fans in
India can now have the option to sample excellent
sports content, even during non-primetime hours.
NBA games will be telecast live between 0600 hours
to 1000 hours IST daily.
As part of SPNI’s efforts to build the fan base of
NBA in India, the network launched ‘Around the
Hoop’ last year, a live wraparound show, with
content specifically customised for viewers in India.
‘Around the Hoop’ returns this season with host
Manas Singh, who will talk to NBA experts and

Airtel Digital TV posts highest Q2 net subscriber addition in 4 years
MUMBAI: Airtel Digital TV has posted its highest
fiscal second quarter net subscriber additions in
almost four years. The DTH operator has added
256,000 net customers during the quarter ended
30 September 2016 compared to 164,000 a year
ago.
In the preceding quarter ended 30 June, Airtel
Digital TV had added 424,000 net subscribers,
which was its highest net subscriber addition in
four years.
The company’s total subscriber base increased 2.1
per cent to 12.4 million compared to 12.1 million in
the preceding quarter.
ARPU
Airtel Digital TV’s average revenue per user
(ARPU) dropped to Rs 232 during the quarter
compared to Rs 233 in the trailing quarter.
In the year-ago period, Airtel Digital TV had
reported an ARPU of Rs 224.
Churn
Monthly churn saw a 50% increase to 1.2% from
0.8 per cent in the preceding quarter. In the
year-ago period, the churn was 1.3%.
EBITDA
The DTH operator’s EBITDA remained flat at Rs
303 crore (Rs 3.03 billion) compared to Rs 301.1
crore (Rs 3.01 billion) in the previous quarter. In
the year-ago period, EBITDA stood at Rs 234.3
crore (Rs 2.34 billion).
EBITDA margin for the quarter was 35.5%
compared to 36% in the previous quarter.
EBIT fell 42.65% to Rs 69.9 crore (Rs 699 million)
from Rs 121.9 crore (Rs 1.22 billion) in the
preceding quarter. In the year-ago period, EBIT
was at Rs 17 crore (Rs 170 million).
Revenue
Revenue increased to Rs 854.5 crore (Rs 8.55
billion) from Rs 836.9 crore (Rs 8.37 billion) in the
preceding quarter. In the year-ago period,
revenue was at Rs 706.8 crore (Rs 7.07 billion).
Capex
During the current quarter, the company incurred
a capital expenditure of Rs 254.1 crore (Rs 2.54
billion) compared to Rs 203 crore (Rs 2.03 billion) in
the preceding quarter. In the year-ago period,
capex was at Rs 250.1 crore (Rs 2.5 billion).
The resultant operating free cash flow during the
quarter stood at Rs 48.8 crore (Rs 488 million)
compared to Rs 98.1 crore (Rs 981 million) in the
trailing quarter.
The company also increased its offering of
standard-definition (SD) channels to 480 from 469
in the first quarter of the fiscal year. The high
definition (HD) offering increased to 55 from 51,
while its total channel offering increased to 535
from 520.

Airtel Digital TV’s average revenue per user
(ARPU) dropped to Rs 232 during the quarter
compared to Rs 233 in the trailing quarter.
In the year-ago period, Airtel Digital TV had
reported an ARPU of Rs 224.
Churn
Monthly churn saw a 50% increase to 1.2% from
0.8 per cent in the preceding quarter. In the
year-ago period, the churn was 1.3%.
EBITDA
The DTH operator’s EBITDA remained flat at Rs
303 crore (Rs 3.03 billion) compared to Rs 301.1
crore (Rs 3.01 billion) in the previous quarter. In
the year-ago period, EBITDA stood at Rs 234.3
crore (Rs 2.34 billion).
EBITDA margin for the quarter was 35.5%
compared to 36% in the previous quarter.
EBIT fell 42.65% to Rs 69.9 crore (Rs 699 million)
from Rs 121.9 crore (Rs 1.22 billion) in the
preceding quarter. In the year-ago period, EBIT
was at Rs 17 crore (Rs 170 million).
Revenue
Revenue increased to Rs 854.5 crore (Rs 8.55
billion) from Rs 836.9 crore (Rs 8.37 billion) in the
preceding quarter. In the year-ago period,
revenue was at Rs 706.8 crore (Rs 7.07 billion).
Capex
During the current quarter, the company incurred
a capital expenditure of Rs 254.1 crore (Rs 2.54
billion) compared to Rs 203 crore (Rs 2.03 billion) in
the preceding quarter. In the year-ago period,
capex was at Rs 250.1 crore (Rs 2.5 billion).
The resultant operating free cash flow during the
quarter stood at Rs 48.8 crore (Rs 488 million)
compared to Rs 98.1 crore (Rs 981 million) in the
trailing quarter.
The company also increased its offering of
standard-definition (SD) channels to 480 from 469
in the first quarter of the fiscal year. The high
definition (HD) offering increased to 55 from 51,
while its total channel offering increased to 535
from 520.

ZEEL’s Q2 ad revenue indicates softness in growth for industry
MUMBAI: Confirming the trend of ad slowdown in
the industry, Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd
(ZEEL) has reported advertising revenue growth of
15.7% in the fiscal second quarter over the year-
ago period. Though this is still double-digit growth,
it indicates a softness in the overall ad expenditure
scenario for the year.
Media agencies had earlier warned about a steep
cut in ad expenditure by e-commerce companies.
This would impact the TV ad expenditure growth
this year, they had said.
E-commerce companies had spent heavily last year.
This is one of the reasons why ZEEL had reported a
year-on-year growth of 34.7% growth in the
second quarter of FY16. In the first quarter of
FY17, the company had reported ad revenue
growth of 19.2% YoY.
ZEEL’s subscription revenue growth in the fiscal
second quarter ended 30 September has been
stronger at 21.7%.
Q2 ad revenue

Airtel launches 4G in Chhattisgarh, Bihar
MUMBAI: Telecom company Airtel today announced
the launch of its 4G services in Chhattisgarh and
Bihar.
Services in Chhattisgarh have gone live in Raipur
and Bilaspur.
Airtel 4G will deliver fast mobile broadband speeds
and enable customers to enjoy uninterrupted HD
video streaming, superfast uploading and
downloading of movies, music and images.
Customers will be able to access 4G across a range
of smart devices including mobile phones, 4G MiFi

Paytm set to open its Bank next year
The e-commerce payment platform Paytm will
soon be opening the brick-and-motor banking
institution in India. The information has from
our close sources who says that Paytm bank will
be open as early as next year. The Indian e-
commerce website was granted payment bank
license by RBI only last year along with 10
other
entities like Reliance Industries, Vodafone,
Airtel and a few more.
As per the information we have received, a
user
who opens an account in the Paytm bank will
have his/her account connected to the Paytm
wallet. A customer can open an account with
the
initial deposit of Rs. 5,000. The most interesting
and attractive information about the Paytm
back is its interest rate, which is going to be
14.50% per annum . No other bank offers an
interest rate of 14.50% or even close. Kotak
Mahindra offers the maximum interest rate of
