Google Maps is one of the handy and useful tools in getting you from point A to B, until you find yourself stuck in an area with poor data reception. To counter this issue and to save on expensive data download charges, Google has introduced a new Wi-Fi only offline mode. After enabling the mode, Maps will go offline when you don’t have any Wi-Fi signal. This feature will come handy for those who haven’t subscribed to a mobile data plan or are on plans with limited data and are afraid Google Maps would consume data from their plan.

When in offline mode, navigation will be limited to downloaded areas on your device. As Google Maps will only rely on offline data, it won’t try to download data from non-existent network, which will also help to save on battery life. However, Google Maps won’t be able to show real-time traffic updates and any other feature that requires data connectivity.

The other feature adds the ability to save offline maps on SD card. Google, on its blog post mentioned that entry-level smartphones come with storage capacity as low as 4GB, which is not enough for storing music, apps, videos and more. With the ability to save offline maps to SD card, users will no longer need to delete their photos and other content, just so that they can navigate offline. The feature can also come handy for those who travel overseas – it can greatly help them avoid data roaming charges.
