ISRO mulling over using private enterprise for satellite launches

$

The Indian Space Research Organzation (ISRO) is considering the possibility of involving Indian industry in a greater role to meet the increased national requirements and possible commercial demand for launch services.

Discussions are being held with the Indian industry towards formulating a plan & strategy to enhance the capacity and capability of managing the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) programme on an end to end basis.

Space Minister Jitendra Singh told Parliament today that ISRO has been pursuing a conscious approach of building up and nurturing the industrial capabilities in the country to maximally support the Indian Space Programme.

Through appropriate transfer of technology and hand-holding, ISRO is making focused efforts to consolidate and enhance participation of Indian industries for manufacturing and production of space related hardware such as rocket engine & stages, propellant tanks, spacecraft structures, solar panels, thermal control systems, electronic packages etc., required for satellites and launch vehicles.

A provision exists for private players to operate communication satellites on their own in the country through an established mechanism called Committee for Authorising the establishment and operations of Indian Satellite Systems (CAISS).

HP Elite x3, which was first showcased at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona is finally shipping next month. The smartphone is priced at $699 and will begin shipping August 29 in the US.
HP had announced Elite x3 under company’s device as a service model. HP’s Elite x3 takes advantage of Windows 10 Mobile’s Continuum feature and HP wants it to be the only device people own.
While the device is priced at $699, HP will sell Elite x3 bundled with a charging dock for $799. HP also plans to launch a bare bone laptop that can be powered entirely with Elite x3 sometime later.
HP introduces business class Android and Windows devices
HP’s target audience here is the enterprise customers and Windows Phone fans might feel left out. Microsoft – the Windows platform maker has stopped introducing new devices based on the ecosystem and with Windows now commanding less than 1 per cent market share, the Windows 10 Mobile future is unclear.
HP, however, seems convinced with Elite x3. HP is projecting Elite x3 as the go to device for seamless Continuum experience. HP Elite x3, powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor coupled with 4GB RAM should easily handle Continuum tasks.
HP is already working with business partners to get software ready for app virtualisation, reports The Verge. With Windows 10 Mobile and Continuum, HP promises seamless app experience across phone, laptop and desktop.
While HP has not confirmed the India launch of Elite x3 yet, Windows 10 Mobile certainly stays alive for some time.

Kickass Torrents' Alleged Ringleader Arrested in Poland, Charged in US

Highlights
Kickass Torrents, owned by Vaulin, is the world's biggest piracy website
Vaulin has been charged for copyright infringement in the US
KAT's value is estimated at more than a whopping $54 million

A Ukrainian alleged to be the ringleader of the world's biggest online piracy site, Kickass Torrents, was hit with US criminal charges Wednesday, accused of distributing over $1 billion (roughly Rs. 6,724 crores) worth of illegally copied films, music and other content.

The Justice Department unveiled a criminal complaint against Artem Vaulin, 30, of Kharkiv, Ukraine, who was arrested in Poland earlier in the day and is being sought by US authorities for copyright infringement, money laundering and other charges.

Vaulin is alleged to own Kickass Torrents or KAT, which in recent years has eclipsed Pirate Bay and others to become the world's biggest source of pirated media.

The criminal complaint said the website offers "a sophisticated and user-friendly environment in which its users are able to search for and locate content" which is protected by copyright.

KAT, which distributes films, video games, television programs, music and other electronic media, is estimated to be the 69th most frequently visited website on the Internet, according to a Justice Department statement.

"Vaulin is charged with running today's most visited illegal file-sharing website, responsible for unlawfully distributing well over $1 billion of copyrighted materials," said Assistant Attorney General Leslie Caldwell.

"In an effort to evade law enforcement, Vaulin allegedly relied on servers located in countries around the world and moved his domains due to repeated seizures and civil lawsuits. His arrest in Poland, however, demonstrates again that cybercriminals can run, but they cannot hide from justice."

US officials will seek to extradite Vaulin to face charges filed in federal court in Chicago, which ordered the seizure of one bank account and seven domain names associated with the file-sharing website.

The complaint said officials were able to track and identify Vaulin from records provided by Apple on his iCloud account.

Service in 28 languages
According to the complaint, KAT operates in 28 languages and has made available movies that were still in theaters along with other content, earning revenue from advertising throughout its site.

The website's value is estimated at more than $54 million (roughly Rs. 363 crores), with annual advertising revenue in the range of $12.5 million to $22.3 million, according to the complaint.

KAT has moved its domains several times after being blocked in Britain, Ireland, Italy, Denmark, Belgium and Malaysia, according to the complaint, and has relied on a network of computer servers located around the world, including in Chicago.

Recently, the website allowed users to download illegal copies of recent hit movies such as "Captain America: Civil War," "Now You See Me 2," and "Finding Dory."

Vaulin, who used the screen name "tirm," was involved in designing the original website and ran the site which has been operating since 2008 through a Ukrainian-based front company called Cryptoneat.

According to the Justice Department, KAT's website "purports to comply with the removal of copyrighted materials" but evidence showed it did not remove content requested by organizations such as the Motion Picture Association of America, the Recording Industry Association of America and Entertainment Software Association.

The move comes with US officials in a long battle to extradite the head of Megaupload, another major piracy site shuttered by the FBI in 2012.

The head of Megaupload, known by the pseudonym Kim Dotcom, is free on bail in New Zealand pending the extradition effort, and recently vowed to revive his operations.

His extradition appeal is set to begin in the High Court in Auckland on August 29 and is expected to last four to eight weeks.

Pirate Bay meanwhile has been able to keep operating despite jail sentences handed down in Sweden against its founders, and the seizure of its web domains.

Authorities say they can seize or shut down illegal file-sharing sites but that the operators often reopen with servers in different jurisdictions.

RCom-Aircel merger may conclude next week: Report

NEW DELHI: The merger between RCom and Aircel Wireless Business is likely to conclude next week, CNBC-TV18 reported on Thursday.

The report said that the two companies, in a 50-50 deal, will together infuse Rs 5,000 crore of equity funding in the merged entity.

RCom and Aircel are likely to transfer Rs 14,000 crore debt into the merged entity, the report said.

RCom and Aircel have been in exclusive talks since December on a much-anticipated amalgamation in what would be the first in-market telecom merger of national scale in the country.

As per terms of the pact, RCom will hive off its wireless business into a separate arm, which will be combined with Maxis-owned Aircel, with both companies having equal ownership. The new $6 billion entity proposed will remain unlisted in the initial years and operate under a new brand name.

Earlier ET reported that Aircel CEO Kaizad Heerjee emerged as a strong contender to head the merged wireless entity.

RCom’s 4G migration disappoints, angers Chennai data subscribers

$

For the past few days, there has been an uproar among Reliance Communication’s data subscribers in Chennai. Consumers at large have posted innumerable complaints about the telecom major led by Anil Dhirubhai Ambani. It is a known fact that Reliance Communication (RCom) has initiated the process of moving its existing data subscribers from 3G to 4G. But has the process been smooth and has the company dealt with the shift at ease? Well the answer is No!

Customers here in Chennai have been agonized by loss or intermittent data connectivity from July 10, 2016. Consumers who use the company’s wireless connection have experienced data exchange at an extremely slow speed affecting all internet related activities. Subscribers have voiced their complaints on the network coverage being very poor in the recent days which has affected browsing in full speed.

Consumers were further infuriated when RCom’s Customer Care helpline remained unanswered or when customer care representatives were unable to validate the slow connectivity or loss in connectivity. Most subscribers made a beeline to their local area RCom outlet just to realize that there is a network sharing agreement with MTS. It has to be recalled that RCom has a spectrum sharing agreement with MTS. Russian conglomerate Sistema’s Indian telecom unit, Sistema Shyam Teleservices Ltd (SSTL) operates under the MTS brand in India.

Another major reason that irked Chennai consumers is the absolute compulsion to purchase a new device that accommodates the 4G SIM card, which was provided by the company at free of cost. Existing consumers, who use Wi-Fi Reliance Pro 3 dongle or a Wi-pod, now, need to compulsorily purchase a new device that costs Rs 2,700 to upgrade to 4G. The consumers were also informed that their existing 3G compatible device will be non-functional from August 1, 2016, as the company will no more operate on 3G spectrum. Few customers have felt betrayed at this decision by RCom, as there have been many consumers who purchased a 3G compatible wireless device just in early 2016. Also, the consumers feel that this was unfairly planned to allow billing cycle for the previous month to complete.

In the meantime, this problem gave many other competing and leading data providers the opportunity to attract new customers with upgraded plans and smooth 4G connection at higher speed. How much of RCom’s customer base in Chennai actually gets retained with the service provider is yet to be seen.

Dish TV to introduce card-less set top boxes

Dish TV India is looking at moving away from set top boxes requiring smart cards for subscribers to its satellite pay TV service. This is likely to take place over the next three or four months.

Last weekend, India’s largest DTH provider announced that it had selected Rambus’ Cryptomedia security platform for use in its pay TV satellite system. The platform, which includes a hardware root-of-trust embedded in the set-top box chipset, ensures secure distribution of premium content for cable and satellite operators while eliminating the need for a smart card and enhancing usability of the set-top box.

“As we look to grow our customer base from the current 13 million subscribers, the demand for cost-effective and robust content protection solutions becomes increasingly important for consumers seeking premium content,” said Dish TV India managing director Jawahar Goel. “By leveraging the embedded CryptoMedia core, we no longer need a smart card to provide secure access to premium content, significantly reducing the cost and improving the security of the set-top box.”

The CryptoMedia Content Protection Core, developed by Rambus Cryptography Research, is one of several new security elements to be integrated in Dish TV India’s latest set-top boxes. Together with the CryptoMedia operator services, the solution provides a flexible security foundation that allows Dish TV India to easily update and reconfigure software and hardware security throughout the lifecycle of the set-top box. Dish TV India will launch the new platform in broad commercial operation later this year.

“By using the CryptoMedia Content Protection Core, Dish TV India recognizes the value of enabling another level of protection in the set-top box chipset alongside security elements provided by CAS vendors,” said Martin Scott, senior vice president and general manager of the Security Division at Rambus. “Our CryptoMedia Security Platform provides Dish TV India with extra protection for the delivery of content, utilizing our expertise in both embedded security and ecosystem enablement.”

Formerly part of the CryptoFirewall family, the CryptoMedia Content Protection Core is designed to provide strong security and superior system design flexibility for premium content distribution. The solution minimizes the risk of security failure and helps simplify product development. The core is available in a broad range of set-top box and smart TV chipsets and is compatible with the leading CAS and DRM systems to prevent unauthorized access to content and services, including features like pay-per-view and service-tier upgrades.
