Cisco today announced that Videocon d2h India’s leading DTH platform has selected the Cisco Virtual DCM® to provide its subscribers with superior video experiences. The deployment provides Videocon d2h with a flexible infrastructure and simplified operations for advanced video processing functionality taking advantage of virtualization and orchestration from Cisco’s Virtualized Video Processing (V2P) platform. The Virtual DCM provides Videocon d2h the bandwidth efficiencies to deploy new services and meet ever-increasing consumer demands for 4K, multiscreen, OTT and Cloud DVR. The Cisco Visual Networking Index Forecast 2015-2020 predicts that by 2020, 82% of IP traffic by will be video, and 50% of IP video traffic will be HD/UHD, and mobile devices will drive most of the growth, making 43% of IP traffic. Sony awaits BCCI’s final offer for IPL rights renewal

Sony Pictures Networks India (SPNI) is awaiting BCCI’s ‘final’ offer for renewing the broadcast rights deal for the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Sony, which holds the IPL broadcast rights for South Asia, has made an offer to the BCCI during the two-month negotiation window.

As per the agreement between two parties, Sony was to make an offer to the BCCI. In turn, India’s cricket board had to make a final offer. There was a two-month negotiation period to hammer out a new deal.

“The negotiations period has expired and now we are waiting for them (the BCCI) to make us a concrete offer. We have honoured our commitment. I would say we have fulfilled all our obligations,” Sony CEO NP Singh told Mumbai Mirror.

While Singh refused to comment about the offer made by the company, media reports have speculated that the BCCI is eyeing $4 billion from the new IPL deal. Market experts say this might be on the higher side.

The BCCI’s confidence stems from the fact that Star India will make an all-out bid to acquire the IPL rights should it reach the bidding stage.

There have been reports in the media which have stated that the BCCI has asked Sony to take part in the bidding process.

According to Mumbai Mirror, Sony does not consider this as the ‘final offer’.

“It’s difficult for me to comment. We have been reading media reports. We had a period of 60 days in which we had to negotiate. Some negotiations did take place. And we are waiting for them to make us an offer,” Singh told the daily.

According to its existing contract, Sony has the right of first refusal as well as the right to match the counter offer made by any rival.

After Sony’s agreement to buy out ZEE-owned Ten Sports for $385 million, India has become a two-player sports broadcasting market. The media rights for IPL will have two contenders in Sony and Star India.

SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket exploded at the neighboring Kennedy Space Centre in Florida, NASA is confident that its asteroid sample return mission will launch on schedule on September 8. The OSIRIS-REx spacecraft sits fine atop a United Launch Alliance Atlas 5 at Cape Canaveral’s Space Launch Complex 41 – less than two km away where the Falcon 9 exploded on Thursday in a routine test firing ahead of the Amos-6 satellite launch into space. The satellite launch was to expand Facebook‘s presence in Africa by beaming internet from the sky. The Amos-6 satellite was to become the first in the social networking giant’s project to spread internet to the developing world.


“The launch for NASA’s OSIRIS-REx mission remains on track for September 8. Initial assessments indicate the United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket and OSIRIS-REx spacecraft are healthy and secure at Space Launch Complex-41, which is 1.1 miles from SpaceX’s launch pad where the incident occurred,” NASA said in a statement. “We remain confident in our commercial partners and firmly stand behind the successful 21st century launch complex that NASA, other federal agencies, and US commercial companies are building on Florida’s Space Coast,” it added. The Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, Security-Regolith Explorer (OSIRIS-REx) spacecraft will travel to the near-Earth asteroid Bennu and bring a sample back to Earth for intensive study.


The mission will help scientists investigate how planets formed and how life began, as well as improve our understanding of asteroids that could impact Earth. The 2,110-kg fully-fuelled spacecraft will launch aboard an Atlas V 411 rocket during a 34-day launch period that begins on September 8, and reach its asteroid target in 2018. After a careful survey of Bennu to characterize the asteroid and locate the most promising sample sites, OSIRIS-REx will collect between 60 to 2,000 grams of surface material with its robotic arm and return the sample to Earth via a detachable capsule in 2023, the US space agency said.

“Today’s incident — while it was not a NASA launch — is a reminder that spaceflight is an incredible challenge, but our partners learn from each success and setback,” NASA added. Nobody is thought to have been hurt in the explosion. The explosion, however, is a setback for SpaceX. The California-based company, led by billionaire Elon Musk, had been ramping up with frequent launches to make up for a backlog created by a launch accident in June 2015. “The situation at the Cape is being evaluated, and it’s too early to know whether the incident will affect the schedule for upcoming NASA-related SpaceX launches to the International Space Station (ISS),” the US space agency noted. Pakistan gets tough on Indian DTH & content

MUMBAI:Politics and media make for strange bed fellows. More often than not one annoys the other. And a backlash follows even worse than a woman scorned. Take a look at what’s happening in Pakistan. And what’s happening in India.

Both sides are banning the transmission of channels in their respective countries. The Jammu & Kashmir government has banned five channels; earlier the Indian government had banned Pakistani channels. But Pakistani content was being shown on cable networks in the country.

Pakistan, however, is going a step further. It is drawing up a multipronged strategy to close the doors on Indian content transmission into Pakistan whether through Pakistani satellite television or Indian DTH operators like Dish TV. Airtel, Videocon d2h, or on illegal TV cable channels in the country run by local operators there.

On the satellite dishes and DTH front, its media watchdog – the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) - says it is approaching different law-enforcement agencies in Pakistan ensure that sales of Indian DTH operators decoders – which it says are illegally being sold there - are banned in Pakistan as they don’t have landing rights or permissions to beam in Pakistan. It is also in the process of informing the chief ministers of the various provinces, including the Federal Investigation Agency, the Federal Bureau of Revenue to get behind the money trail of the sale and purchase of decoders and annual subscriptions for Indian DTH services. Dealers of Indian DTH decoders are going to be acted against immediately by local enforcement agencies.

According to him close to three million illegal Indian DTH decoders are currently available and active in Pakistan, on which there will be a crackdown through these measures.

On the content front, Alam firmly stated that his organization would ensure that Pakistani satellite television channels adhere to the six minutes per hour limit on Indian content going forward. Pakistani satellite TV channels have been airing Indian soaps, series and Naagin is among the top rated shows in the country. A Pemra board meeting took a decision to totally ban Indian channels as none of them have downlinking permission.

Alam has ordered cable TV networks to stop running illegal channels on their networks using compact disc content, failing which again strict action will once again be taken.

Pemra gave the managements of the broadcast networks 45 days until 15 October to adhere to the diktat, failing which punitive action- ranging from fines to suspension of licences - will follow.

Finally, the Pemra boss also made appeals to the Pakistani viewers to put a full stop to Indian content and satellite TV. "I urge the people to stop using illegal Indian dishes as it is in utter violation of the law and against the national interest," he said.

Straddling the line between fall and winter, plenty and paucity, life and death, Halloween is a time of celebration and superstition and it seems to have arrived early on Star World Premiere HD. The channel that takes pride in bringing the biggest and most critically acclaimed shows to India is set to premiere the two spookiest shows of television – Ryan Murphy’s Horror Anthology series American Horror Story Season 6 and Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan’s horror drama The Strain Season 3.
The vampire drama ‘The Strain’ is set to return for its third season on September 3rd at 11:00 PM in India and stars Corey Stoll (House of Cards), David Bradley (Argus Filch in the Harry Potter film series and Walder Frey in Game of Thrones) and Sean Astin (Lord of the Rings) in the lead roles. The Strain comes from a trilogy of novels written by Guillermo del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth, Pacific Rim, Hellboy) and Chuck Hogan, who wrote the novel, Prince of Thieves that Ben Affleck used as the basis for The Town.
Regarding the concept, del Toro sought to de-romanticize vampires, which have been humanized and turned into love interests in recent years. During the launch of the series, del Toro had said: “Vampires have been romanticised. We’ve kind of de-fanged them. I wanted to do this not as a movement, but as an alternative. It is gory, but not gory for the sake of being gory. I would say it’s biologically curious. But the way the vampires breed is truly brutal.”
The thriller started with an investigation into a mysterious viral outbreak in New York City with hallmarks of an ancient and evil strain of vampirism. As the strain spreads, the head of the Center for Disease Control Canary Team and his team wage war for the fate of humanity itself. The season three begins with New York City being written off by the federal government, leaving the remaining residents fighting for survival on their own in this battleground.
Next in the line-up is the much-awaited Season 6 of American Horror Story that will mark its debut on September 18th at 11:30 PM in India. Titled ‘Spirit of India: Ganesh Chaturthi’, the special showcases the dynamic colors of spirituality, grandeur and amusement, ushering in the celebration of Ganesha during the 10-day festival. UK-born Indian actor Danny Sura immerses viewers into the cheerful mood of the festival that is celebrated all over India, but not with the kind of intensity and fervour that it brings to the country’s financial capital Mumbai. Most popularly known for his blessings of wealth, fame and fortune, Lord Ganesha or Ganapati is one the most popular deities in India. The name Ganesha has a meaning where ‘Gan’ means group of people and ‘pati’ means ruler or lord. Danny Sura travels across the country to explore interesting traditions and trivia related to the festival. Beginning his journey in Mumbai, Danny visits one of the biggest mandaps where he meets a group of Catholic women who tell him that their forefathers, Christian fishermen, had started the festivities at Lal Baug in 1934. It is estimated that over 1.5 million people visit this mandap every day during the course of the festival. At another mandap, Danny meets a set designer who tells him about the tradition of not painting the Ganesha idol’s eyes until it is taken to someone’s residence or temple, which has gradually changed to covering the eyes and the face of the idol until an auspicious time. Danny also introduces a sculpture artist, Yusuf, who has been making Ganesha idols for years. Further in Karnataka, Danny visits an intricately designed mandap that is a replica of the Mysore Palace, and meets a few artisans who make the puja celebration a surprise for the visitors.
