Clinical Tuskers Clean their maiden KPL Title

$

As has been the case over the previous seasons, a new champion was crowned and this time it was Bellary Tuskers as they secured a 35-run win against Hubli Tigers in the final of Karbonn Karnataka Premier League (KPL) 2016, powered by Cycle Pure Agarbathies, on Sunday (October 2).
Rohan Kadam (61 off 40) and Balachandra Akhil (50 off 24) slammed 13 fours and four sixes between them as they sent the Tigers bowlers on a leather hunt to help Tuskers post an imposing total of 189 for 5. Hubli Tigers began well in the chase, but disciplined bowling by Tuskers, led by Steve Lazarus (3-21), meant that the hosts ended up well short of the target.
Mohammad Taha had business written all over him as he set the tone of the chase by dispatching a Prasidh Krishna delivery over the extra-cover fence in the opening over before scoring two consecutive fours off Prateek Jain. Manjesh Reddy, however, couldn't emulate his opening partner, mistiming a lofted shot off Krishna to see Amit Verma take a fine catch. Taha too could have departed soon after but for a misjudgement from Kadam at deep mid-wicket which gave him a reprieve. The hard-hitting opener made full use of the lucky break by tearing into Jain in the fourth over to add a six and three fours to his boundaries' tally.
Kunal Kapoor was the ying to Taha's yang as the Hubli skipper ensured rotation of strike while he also made sure to punish the loose ones. Kapoor too received amnesty in the form of a dropped catch by Suneel Raju, much to the disappointment of left-arm spinner Anil IG, as the hosts moved to 47 for 1 at the end of the first six overs. The crowd, that was chanting in unison for more big hits from Taha, was silenced in the seventh over when he missed a heave and was bowled by Akhil. Stallin Hoover followed soon, trapped in front by an Anil delivery that kept a touch low, leaving Hubli in a spot of bother.
Kapoor and Dikshanshu Negi tried to resurrect the innings, but the former's dismissal, stumped off Verma, followed by KN Bharath, leg-before to Steve Lazarus, pegged Hubli further back. The onus was on Negi and Chethan William, the hero of Hubli's semi-final win, to get team back on track. However, there were no heroics from William this time as a leading edge off Lazarus was snapped up by Raju at point. The left-arm spinner bagged his third wicket a short while later when Negi's attempt to go over the top resulted in the ball travelling only as far as long-off where Kadam took a tumbling catch.
The procession of wickets continued when Kranthi Kumar failed in his attempt execute a big hit off Verma, getting a top-edge to Akhil at point. S Aravind and Sarfaraz Ashraf tried to wield the long handle, but it came a little too late, and the latter became the ninth to depart. A six for Shivil Kaushik in the final over helped Hubli past 150, but there were jubilant scenes in the Tuskers camp soon after.
For the full house that had gathered at the 20000-capacity Karnataka State Cricket Association stadium in Hubli, there was some delight in store straightaway after Tigers chose to bowl. While Kadam was allowed to get off the mark in the opening over due to a clumsy bit of fielding, they soon bagged the big fish as KB Pawan's out-stretched dive couldn't save him from being run out in the second over. Bellary though managed to get a move on as Kadam and Suneel Raju, promoted up the order, found the ropes on multiple occasions. They particularly targeted Kranthi Kumar, who went for 29 runs off his first three overs and was at the receiving end of the first six of the match by Raju, as the Tuskers moved to 53 for 1 at the end of the powerplay.
The 22-year-old Kadam, who was growing from strength to strength with every passing knock, extended the partnership past 50 when he went inside-out over extra cover, off the bowling of left-arm spinner Sarfaraz Ashraf before lifting Chethan William over long-off for his first six. Meanwhile, Raju seemed keen to prove a point having shown indifferent form during the season, as he too kept the big hits coming, and it was Ashraf who was at the receiving end. Kadam went on to bring up a 33-ball fifty, his fourth half-century this season, but saw Raju depart soon after as the right-hander hit a Shivil Kaushik delivery straight to Kunal Kapoor at extra cover.
Raju's exit did not have any bearing on scoring rate as the the experienced B Akhil was in a belligerent mood, while Kadam too scored at a good pace. Kadam had a lucky break when he was put down by Mohammad Taha off Dikshanshu Negi, but Kranthi Kumar made no such error, much to the delight of Kaushik, who gave the left-hander a send off after bagging his third wicket of the season, all coming in the knock-out games. Akhil, though, was in no mood to let go of the momentum as he struck two back-to-back sixes off a hapless Ashraf. Kranthi Kumar managed to keep things quiet for only over before Akhil and Amit Verma took the attack to William, taking 16 runs off the 16th over to power Bellary past 150.
Aravind managed to end Verma's stay as the Bellary skipper was caught by his counterpart when he miscued a big hit. But Hubli couldn't keep in check Akhil's blazing blade as he brought up a 23-ball fifty. However, Tigers heaved a sigh of relief as the 28-year-old departed soon after, edging a Stallin Hoover delivery to keeper KN Bharath. The highest total in a KPL final before this game was 174 by Mysuru Warriors during their chase in 2014, which Bellary managed to go past in the 19th over and eventually finished with the fifth highest total this season when they surpassed 188.
Brief scores: Bellary Tuskers 189/5 in 20 overs (Rohan Kadam 61, B Akhil 50; Shivil Kaushik 2-18) beat Hubli Tigers 154/9 in 20 overs (Dikshanshu Negi 39, Mohammad Taha 36; Steve Lazarus 3-21) by 35 runs.

Dish TV receives interim renewal of DTH licence from MIB till 31 March 2017

MUMBAI: Dish TV has received an interim extension of its direct-to-home (DTH) licence to 31 March 2017 or until the notification of new DTH norms, whichever is earlier.

The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (MIB) has granted the interim extension to Dish TV, a source said.

“Dish TV got the extension from the MIB on 22 September. The period is till 31 March 2017 or till the notification date of new DTH norms, whichever comes first,” the source added.

Dish TV furnished a fresh performance bank guarantee of Rs 40 crore (Rs 400 million). The DTH operator also submitted an undertaking to ensure compliance with the final policy governing the DTH licence.

Earlier, on 27 January this year, the MIB had written to Dish TV stating that it would have to agree to honour the obligations arising from change, if any, in the policy governing the DTH licence. The matter was related to the interim renewal of the company’s DTH licence.

When Dish TV’s licence period lapsed, the DTH operator had got a one-year extension. Though Dish TV’s licence had expired on 1 October 2013, the MIB has been extending the validity of the interim period on the existing terms and conditions in the absence of a policy on the renewal of DTH licences.

In July 2014, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) made recommendations on certain terms and conditions for the renewal of DTH licences. While the MIB is yet to give its nod to these recommendations, it is providing an interim arrangement for Dish TV to continue its DTH services in the country.

In its recommendations on DTH licensing, TRAI has sought for restrictions on vertically and horizontally integrated entities. According to the regulator, an entity that controls a vertically integrated DPO (distribution platform operator) or the vertically integrated DPO itself should not be allowed to ‘control’ any other DPO of the other category.

TRAI has proposed extending the licence period for DTH service providers from the current 10 years to 20 years. It has also suggested reducing the annual licence fee of DTH operators to 8% of adjusted gross revenue (AGR) from the existing 10%. The recommendations await government approval.

Dish TV, India’s first DTH operator, has 14.9 million net subscribers as of June 2016.

Pakistani TV regulator bans Indian channels and content

[Image: Pakistan-Electronic-Media-Regulatory-Authority.png]

MUMBAI: Pakistani TV regulator has reacted to India’s aggressive postures against the neighbouring country that included a surgical strike across the Line of Control (LoC).

Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) has banned Indian channels and content from being broadcast in the country effective 1 October. It also warned that non-compliance of the order would be dealt with strictly under the law.

The regulator said it has received information that some unidentified people across the country are harassing cable TV operators to curtail their business activity and are also providing them equipment from a company unknown to PEMRA licensing department.

The move follows calls for removal of Pakistani actors currently working in India by several political groups in the wake of the terrorist attack in Uri that took away the lives of 19 Indian soldiers. The Uri attack has been blamed on terrorist groups operating in Pakistan. The diplomatic relations between the two countries have virtually broken down since the attack.

In fact, Subhash Chandra-promoted ZEEL had gone a step further by removing all Pakistani content from its channel Zindagi. It also called off its joint production with Geo TV for a show called ‘Teri Meri Jodi’. Zindagi was launched on the back of Pakistani shows.

PEMRA said it had been working for months to finalise and implement a comprehensive strategy to effectively counter proliferation of Indian channels through illegal DTH and excessive Indian content on satellite TV channels and FM radio.

These illegal activities, it alleged, were continuing due to General Parvez Musharraf’s policy to allow Indian dramas on TVs and movies in cinemas of Pakistan to please India, which was allowed to continue by the successive government.

PEMRA said that all stakeholders had been taken on board for banning Indian channels and content.

“Around three million Indian DTH decoders are being sold in the country. We not only want this sale stopped but will also ask relevant agencies to trace the money trail to determine the mode of payments made to Indian dealers selling these decoders to Pakistanis,” said PEMRA chairman Absar Alam.

The regulator has asked cable TV operators across the country to report and share identities and phone numbers of people who are compelling them to carry Indian channels and content.

Implementing Lodha reforms would mean picking between IPL and Champions Trophy: Thakur

Two days after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) took a selective approach to its adoption of the Lodha panel recommendations, president Anurag Thakur justified the board's defiance towards some of the necessitated reforms by pointing at the possible implication of accepting the proposals of the Lodha panel in toto. Doing so, according to Thakur, would leave India having to put the brakes on the the fastest growing league in the world - the Indian Premier League - due to the cramped nature of the international calendar.
India's apex court court ratified, among various proposals, the need to have a 15-day gap between India's international calendar and the IPL. Such a proposal, according to Thakur, could push India into having to choose between playing the Champions Trophy or the the IPL, early in 2017.
"As per the Lodha committee recommendations you have to give a 15-day window before and after IPL. There is the Australia series before IPL and Champions Trophy after it. So BCCI has to take a call whether they will play IPL or Champions Trophy - you have to pick one of the two if the Lodha Committee recommendations are implemented in toto. Members can take a call at that time, whether IPL or Champions Trophy," Thakur told mediapersons on the sidelines of the ongoing India-New Zealand Test in Kolkata on Monday (October 3).
"It's going to be a problem every year. You have certain months to play in India. There is a window made available for IPL so you have to take a call whether the world's fastest growing league, which has showcased to the world, how you can make domestic cricket more popular, and given birth to many other leagues like football, hockey, badminton, kabaddi and all that - whether that has to go," he added.
In its October 1 Special General Meeting, BCCI gave in to several of the panel's demands, including the need to have a Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) in the newly-formed apex council. The board's members, however, did not vote in favour of several other key recommendations such as those involving age and tenure caps for board administrators and the one-state-one-vote policy among others. Thakur maintained the board's defiant stand while maintaining that he was not averse to reforms but that BCCI was also bound by Tamil Nadu societies act under which it is registered.
"BCCI is open to reforms. We have taken various steps in the last 18 months, it's a huge list. Even when the recommendations of Lodha came, there was a timeline set. We have lived up to the first timeline, achieved the second timeline, Sept 30 (The BCCI SGM was adjourned by a day)," Thakur said.
"As president, I had to call all the member boards, they can only adopt. If you look at our marathon meetings of 5-6 hrs, we have discussed (the recommendations) at length. Can you have C&AG representative as per TN Act? But they agreed for C&AG. Where members could not agree and could not pass with 3/4th majority were a few decisions that were conveyed to Supreme Court and Lodha committee with the reasons given by the members. We have to follow the law of land. We have highest respect for the Supreme Court. That is why we are following various timelines but at the same time, we are bound by the Tamil Nadu Act.
Thakur also came in defence of the board's reluctance to conform to the one-state-one-vote policy recommended by the Lodha panel. The recommendation, if implemented, could leave associations like the Mumbai Cricket Associations (MCA) having to share their casting votes with Maharashtra and Vidarbha on a rotational basis. Gujarat, Baroda and Saurashtra boards face a similar predicament if the proposal is pushed through.
"Many members felt that if Mumbai won Ranji Trophy for 40-plus times, and founder members like Baroda, states like Gujarat that have coming up with most modern and new stadium with 1.5lakh capacity, if they are taken into one-state-one-vote category, out of six states, six have stadiums, they host international matches, their rights will be taken out. Various things came out from members that can be conveyed to the court," the board president said.
BCCI's insistence on selectively accepting the proposals has irked the Lodha committee, which has asked the board to "fall in line" with the directives on more than one occasion. Earlier last week, the panel had moved the supreme court with a request to override the top management of BCCI for failing to comply to its timelines. The panel is also reportedly miffed by the governing body of cricket's continued disregard for the judgement. BCCI's appointment of the selection panel and the secretary during its Annual General Meeting were contrary to the court order. On its part. BCCI, too, had filed a review petition asking that the July 18 order be suspended until it heard the board's stance against some of the directives.

It will be either IPL or Champions Trophy in 2017: BCCI President Anurag Thakur

India may have to pull out of next year’s Champions Trophy in England if the BCCI implements Justice RM Lodha Committee recommendations in toto, Board president Anurag Thakur warned on Monday.
As per the reforms suggested by the Lodha Panel, there has to be a 15-day window before and after the IPL. The Champions Trophy is scheduled from June 1-18 while IPL is likely to end in last week of May.
“I don’t know whether India will be able to play Champions Trophy or not. If you go by the Lodha Committee report you have to play either the IPL or the Champions Trophy. So BCCI has to take a call on that,” Thakur said.
“There is Australia series before IPL and Champions Trophy after it. So BCCI has to take a call whether they will play IPL or Champions Trophy — you have to pick one of the two if the Lodha Committee recommendations are implemented in toto,” he said to a query that India were insisting to be placed in different group than Pakistan amid rising political tensions.

“The question of India-Pakistan arises only if India plays Champions Trophy.”
On whether the IPL could be scheduled differently, he said: “You tell me how you can do it. I will give you the window.”
Insisting that it would be a problem every year, he said,” You have certain months to play in India. There is a window made available for IPL so you have to take a call whether the world’s fastest growing league, which has showcased to the world how you can make domestic cricket more popular, and give birth to many other leagues like football, hockey, badminton, kabaddi and all that – whether that has to go.”
Thakur also said BCCI has undergone huge reforms in the recent past.
“If you look at the BCCI, it is open about reforms. In the last 18 months, I first appointed Cricket Advisory Committee, hiring greats like Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman and Sourav Ganguly. Selection of the coaches, Rahul Dravid and Anil Kumble and appointment of CEO and CFOs. We have taken various steps in the last 18 months, there’s a huge list.”
Asked about his response to SC’s ‘fall-in-line or we will make you fall in line’, he said: “I did not see that line in the SC order that is reported in the media.”
“We have passed many recommendations, adopted them as recommended, many could not be adopted by members as they have given various reasons for that. One must appreciate that BCCI was always open about it. Before the recommendations, we have adopted many that were not part of it.
“We have to follow the law of land. We have highest respect for the Supreme Court. That is why we are following various timelines. At the same time, we are bound by the TN Societies Act.”
Singling out the one-state-one-vote and cooling off period of one year after a three-year term for thrice, Thakur said, “Many members felt that if Mumbai won Ranji Trophy for 41 times, and founder members like Baroda, state like Gujarat coming up with most modern and new stadium with 1.5 lakh capacity, if they are taken into 1-state-1-vote category, then out of six states, six have stadiums, they host International matches, their rights will be taken out. Various things came out from members that can be conveyed to the court.”
“Look at the overall leadership. If there is cooling off, there is no continuity in state and BCCI,” Thakur said as an insider pointed out that the new rule would prevent them from becoming an influential administrator.
Citing example of Jagmohan Dalmiya, the BCCI insider said, “If you take a cooling off period after three years where will the continuity come? How will another Dalmiya will be born. That will only happen with experience in states and the BCCI.”
“It’s like three years you write on cricket and then you become a political writer for one year. I will see how much continuity you have. Thakur became president of HPCA in 2000. If he had retired in 2003 after laying foundation stone then probably the Board President XI-Pakistan match would not have materialised in 2005.”

MUMBAI: Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd (ZEEL) has unveiled its slate of six new and current formats for licensing and development at Mipcom 2016.

Zee’s unscripted formats include dance reality show ‘Dance India Dance’ and a new game show titled ‘Moksha’. Launching its sixth season later this year, there have been numerous spinoffs of the ‘Dance India Dance’ format, a Singapore edition, as well as a local production in Thailand. ‘Moksha’ is a game show requiring strategy, luck and skill.

The scripted formats include a series of 12 wickedly twisted short stories ‘Phantasmagoria’, and ‘Eclipse Harvest’, a high-octane crime series about the NYPD Organised Crime Control Bureau. It also includes two additional all-time favourite scripted formats in the comedy genre – ‘Hum Paanch’ (Five Is A Crowd) and ‘Kareena Kareena’.

‘Phantasmagoria’ centres around an inconspicuous pawn shop in the corner of a decrepit bylane. Each tale brings about a series of illusions, apparitions and deception based on the elements that are characteristic of each zodiac sign.

In ‘Eclipse Harvest’, the son of a decorated officer in the Narcotics Division and the son of a drug lord each set out to eclipse their respective fathers of their glory. The mothers of the young men narrate the stories of how their lives are taken away by circumstances and how they are paradoxically connected.

ZEEL global syndication and production, international ad sales, chief business officer Sunita Uchil says, “Zee has a rich history of developing and producing programmes with universal themes that are adaptable to all regions of the world. We are looking forward to hosting buyers and showcasing our new formats, as well as the popular dance-based reality show ‘Dance India Dance’, at our Zee Bollyworld Preview Theatre. In other words, Zee Bollyworld promises a truly edge of the seat experience at Mipcom 2016”.

For the first time, the screening sessions will be held in the Zee Bollyworld Preview Theatre located at ZEE’s booth # P1-K51.
