Reliance Jio will try to gain subscribers at any expense: Analyst

We have a negative outlook of the Malaysian telco sector because Telecom Malaysia which has so far been a fixed line operator is now entering into wireless space, said Nitin Soni.

In a chat with ET Now, Nitin Soni, Director, Fitch Ratings said that both, Malaysian and Indian telecom sectors have negative outlook and Reliance Jio is playing a disrupter in the Indian market. Edited excerpts:

The fact that one of the long-term strategic holders of Idea is looking at exiting. Is that an indication that there is going to be immense stress for Indian telecom companies?

Yes, because we rate some of the subsidiaries of Axiata Group let me give you a background. So what is happening with the Axiata Group is that they are facing lot of competition in their Malaysian telecom sector, we have a negative outlook of the Malaysian telco sector because Telecom Malaysia which has so far been a fixed line operator is now entering into wireless space so it is creating problems for Axiata and while its Indonesian and Sri Lankan subsidiaries are not really performing that well and recently Axiata has also invested in acquiring a market leader in Nepal. So in that background, obviously they need cash to protect their balance sheet and to invest in the growing markets and also the fact that in India also we have a negative outlook on the sector because of the competition coming from Reliance Jio in the next one or two years. So, I think it is a combination of these two things that Axiata might have decided to sell their 20% stake and as one of your analyst was also saying they have not really made any money on this investment, the cost of the investment is about 150 and the valuation of Idea for that stake is quite lower currently.

What would you say about the telecom sector right now because there are reports in Bharti Infra as well that perhaps Airtel and Brookefields are in talks for a stake sale there too, do you think Reliance Jio emerges as the strongest contender within telecom?

See, we believe that this industry will gradually consolidate further. We have already seen some consolidation in the sector and given the fact that Reliance Jio with their $15-20 billion of investment and with all the spectrum assets they have they are going to really disrupt the market with cheaper prices so there is no doubt on that. But I think recently looking at the subscriber addition for Jio I think that has slowed down maybe partly due to demonetisation or partly due to as subscribers use more data so the data speed actually slows down for Jio subscribers. But nevertheless I think our opinion is that we have a negative outlook on the sector, we believe that Jio will try to gain subscriber market share at the expense of any profitability and they will offer cheaper prices that will impact the incumbents margins by 150 to 200 bps. Idea is the weakest where their balance sheet is quite leveraged, they do not have pan-India 4G spectrum assets, Bharti is well positioned with the best spectrum assets in 900 megahertz and 4G assets as well and they invest about $3 million a year on capex so I think maybe in the medium term you might see some kind of M&A involving Idea.

After recently unveiling the Coolpad Note 5 in India, the company is now set to introduce two new smartphones — the Coolpad Note 3S and Mega 3 on November 30. The Note 3S is a successor to the Note 3 which was launched in 2015 while the Mega 3 will succeed the Mega 2.5D which debuted in India earlier this year. The company’s media invite does not reveal much about the two smartphones. However, given the price range of the predecessors, the Coolpad Note 3S and the Coolpad Mega 3, in all likelihood, will be budget smartphones.

Based on earlier reports, the two smartphones are most likely be 4G VoLTE enabled. They are further expected to sell through Amazon India through which previous Coolpad smartphones have been launched before.

Coolpad Note 3S specifications
Although details about the upcoming smartphones are scarce at best, based on speculations, the Coolpad Note 3S is expected to feature the same display as its predecessor at 5.5-inches offering HD resolution. The predecessor, Coolpad Note 3, featured a 13-megapixel rear camera coupled with a 5-megapixel front sensor. We could expect the successor to bring in a slight bump in terms of camera specification. It is further speculated that the Coolpad Note 3S will support dual SIM with 4G/LTE. The smartphone is rumored to 3GB of RAM and 16GB of onboard storage.

To give an idea, the Coolpad Note 3 is powered by a MediaTek MT6753 octa-core 64-bit processor paired with 3GB of RAM. It further includes 16GB of internal storage, which is expandable using a microSD card. Backed by a 3,000mAh battery, the smartphone offers connectivity options including dual-SIM card slots, 4G LTE, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth. In terms of software, the Coolpad Note 3 runs on Android 5.1 Lollipop with CoolUI 6.0 layered atop. The budget smartphone is priced at Rs 8,999.

Coolpad Mega 3 specifications
On the other hand, the Coolpad Mega 3 is also expected to boast the same display as its predecessor Mega 2.5D which features a 5.5-inch HD display and a metal unibody design. The Coolpad Mega 2.5D, priced at Rs 6,999, is powered by a MediaTek MT67355P 64-bit quad-core chipset clocked at 1GHz, paired with Mali T720 GPU and 3GB of RAM. It further includes 16GB of internal storage along with microSD card slot with support for up to 32GB. It also includes support for USB OTG (on-the-go).

On the camera front, the predecessor comes with 8-megapixel rear and front camera. Connectivity options include dual-SIM, 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11n, GPS and Bluetooth 4.0. It is fuelled by a 2,500mAh battery. Given that the Coolpad Mega 3 will be an evident upgrade to the 2.5D model, we can expect some improvements especially in term of camera and battery.

These budget smartphones, if priced under Rs 10,000 will be competing against a host of other affordable smartphones in the category including tested performers such as the Xiaomi Redmi 3s Prime, LeEco Le1S, and Lenovo K5 Plus. The Redmi Note 3s Prime features a 5-inch HD IPS display and is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 430 octa-core processor paired with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage, which can be further expanded using a microSD card. It features a 13-megapixel rear camera with LED flash along with a 5-megapixel front camera. Connectivity options include support for 4G LTE and VoLTE voice calling support, dual hybrid SIM slo

Many expect the company to extend its welcome offer, which gives customers free unlimited voice, video calling, SMS and unlimited daily data and voice calls

NEW DELHI: Reliance Industries Limited’s Chairman and Managing Director Mukesh Ambani may make an announcement on telecom venture Reliance Jio while addressing employees and stakeholders of the group.

Many expect the company to extend its welcome offer, which gives customers free unlimited voice, video calling, SMS and unlimited daily data. This may also resonate with potential subscribers who face a challenge for withdrawing and using cash after the government's move to demonetize Rs500 and Rs1000 notes on November 8.

The benefits of free unlimited Voice and data under the Welcome offer are available to its subscribers till December 31, 2016, but only to those customers who subscriber by December 3, the end of the 90-day period permitted for introductory offers after their launch, as mandated by the regulator, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India.

The 4G entrant is offering free voice and capped data services along with free access to its digital services like Live TV, Video On Demand and music service and cloud storage.

“Mass scale free welcome offer could continue until March 2017 to attract subscriber growth towards the celebrated 100 million mark,” Motilal Oswal analysts in a recent note.

Separately, CLSA said the demonetisation drive and a slump in smartphone sales are likely to hurt Jio's entry strategy, adding that the 4G entrant is expected to extend free services beyond December.

"Even before demonetisation, issues with network optimisation and quality had raised the risk of extension of promotions beyond December 2016 by Jio,” CLSA said in a report.

Reliance Jio though has said it has garnered over 50 million subscribers in just 83 days since the service went live commercially on September 5.

They were chargesheeted for alleged offences punishable under section 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of the IPC and under relevant provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act.

NEW DELHI: A special court will on December 19 pronounce its order on the issue of framing charge against former Telecom Minister Dayanidhi Maran, his brother Kalanithi Maran and others in the Aircel-Maxis deal case lodged by CBI and the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

Special Judge O P Saini, who was scheduled to pass the order today on framing of charge as well as on bail applications of the Maran brothers and other accused persons, deferred it to the next date, saying that the order is yet to be prepared.

All the accused have denied the allegations against them by the investigating agencies and have moved bail pleas in the case.

During the arguments on the framing of charge, Special Public Prosecutor Anand Grover had claimed that Dayanidhi had "pressurised" Chennai-based telecom promoter C Sivasankaran to sell his stakes in Aircel and two subsidiary firms to Malaysian firm Maxis Group in 2006.

The charge was strongly refuted by Dayanidhi.

CBI had filed a charge sheet against the Maran brothers, Ralph Marshall, T Ananda Krishnan, M/s Sun Direct TV (P) Ltd, M/s Astro All Asia Networks Plc, UK, M/s Maxis Communications Berhad, Malaysia, and M/s South Asia Entertainment Holdings Ltd, Malaysia and then Additional Secretary (Telecom) late J S Sarma.

They were chargesheeted for alleged offences punishable under section 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of the IPC and under relevant provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act.

In the money laundering case, ED has chargesheeted as accused the Maran brothers, Kalanithi's wife Kavery, Managing Director of South Asia FM Ltd (SAFL) K Shanmugam, SAFL and Sun Direct TV Pvt Ltd (SDTPL) under provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

The court had summoned the six accused after taking cognisance of the ED's charge sheet, saying there was "enough incriminating material" to proceed against them.

The Zenfone 3 Ultra and Zenfone 3 Deluxe unveiled in India earlier this year, are finally going on sale in India.

Asus Zenfone 3 Ultra (ZU680KL) and Zenfone 3 Deluxe (ZS570KL), two smartphones that were unveiled in India earlier this year, are finally going on sale in India. The Zenfone 3 Ultra is priced at Rs 49,999 and will be available in Titanium Grey and Glacier Silver color variants. The Zenfone 3 Deluxe will be available in two variants, priced at Rs 49,999 and Rs 62,999. Both variants will be available in Glacier Silver and Sand Gold color options.

Asus claims that the two smartphones each come with a feature that is ‘world’s first’. For one, both the smartphones feature a combination of metal unibody design and invisible antenna bands. The Zenfone 3 Deluxe was among the first devices to be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 821 chipset, while the Zenfone 3 Ultra was among the first to feature a 6.8-inch full HD IPS display with a 4K TV-Grade image processor.

Asus Zenfone 3 Deluxe specifications
The Asus Zenfone 3 Deluxe has been launched in two variants with different processors. While the higher variant features Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 processor and 256GB onboard storage, the more affordable variant comes with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 820 processor and 64GB internal memory. Both variants come with 6GB of RAM.

The rest of the specifications include a 5.7-inch Super AMOLED, FHD display with Tru2Life Technology, 79 percent screen-to-body ratio, and Corning Gorilla Glass 4 protection. It also comes with a 23-megapixel rear camera with Sony IMX318 Exmor-RS imaging sensor, ƒ/2.0 aperture, four-axis OIS, three-axis EIS, and 4K video recording capabilities. Up front, there is an 8-megapixel selfie camera. Apart from that, the Zenfone 3 Deluxe also features the Pixel Master 3.0 technology, which offers more than 20 camera modes, including a manual mode.

Additionally, on the rear, the smartphone also comes with a built-in fingerprint sensor, which Asus claims also operates with moist fingers. Fuelling the device is a 3,000mAh battery, which comes with Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 3.0 technology for fast charging.

Asus Zenfone 3 Ultra specifications
The Asus Zenfone 3 Ultra shares a lot of the same set of specifications and features, albeit with a few differences. For one, there is a 6.8-inch full HD (1920×1080 pixels) display, and it is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 652 octa-core processor coupled with the Adreno 510 GPU and 4GB of RAM. Unlike the Zenfone 3 Deluxe, the built-in fingerprint sensor on the Zenfone 3 Ultra is positioned on the front. It is fuelled by a massive 4,600mAh battery, which comes with Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 3.0 technology. Additionally, the massive battery also allows the smartphone to double-up as a power bank.

At this price point, Asus’ new Zenfone 3 Deluxe and Zenfone 3 Ultra are bound to face tough competition from the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S7, Google Pixel and Pixel XL, and Apple’s new iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus.

The Indian telecom sector has received foreign direct investment (FDI) of $10 billion in the first eight months of the current fiscal, Telecom Secretary J.S. Deepak said. ”The telecom sector reforms have got a resounding acknowledgement. The FDI which was $1.3 billion in 2014-15, $2.9 billion in 2015-16 has jumped up to more than $10 billion in the first eight months of 2016-17,” Deepak said.

He was addressing the 12th National Summit e-Governance and Digital India organised by Assocham. Talking about Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD)-based mobile banking transactions, Deepak said: “There is not only a need to popularize USSD, but there is a need to simplify it. We need to work on a push USSD rather than a pull USSD.”

The USSD service is used by people using feature phones to check the balance in their bank accounts and transfer money. At a time when the country is undergoing a demonetization drive of higher denomination Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes, every day more and more people are logging into online payment modes and online banking transactions.

“The merchants should be able to push in a message to feature phone users wherein you just have to okay it for a transaction and goes back to the banks. The burden of enabling IFSC (Indian Financial System Code) and other should move from the payers to the recipient,” the secretary added. ALSO READ: Call drops world-wide phenomenon, cannot be completely eradicated: Telecom minister

The sectoral regulator — Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) – has recently lowered the USSD tariff to a maximum of 50 paise per transaction, from the earlier rate of Rs 1.50 per session. He also said 97 percent of the population in India is on 2G and 68 percent on 3G telephony.

MUMBAI: Clearing the cloud on the speculation that demonetisation was going to impact the schedule of Pro Wrestling League Season 2, the organisers have said that they have fixed the new dates of the league from 2 to 19 January.

PWL 2, which has Sony as its broadcast partner, was earlier scheduled to start its second season in December. The second edition of PWL will generate approximately 100 hours of TV content compared to 36 hours in the first season.

ProSportify, in association with the Wrestling Federation of India, today announced the rescheduled dates for the second season that would witness Delhi as the host city for all the matches.

The announcement on rescheduling is heartily welcomed by the international players and Olympic medallists, Erica Wiebe, Mariya Stadnik, Commonwealth gold medallist Odunayo and silver medallist Yana Rattigan as they get an opportunity to celebrate Christmas.

“I’m very happy with the new dates. We would be having ample time to be here with our family on Christmas,” reiterated Olympic gold medallist Erica Wiebe of Canada.

“Despite challenges, we take pride in hosting this mega wrestling event that features the largest pool of Olympians and world champions, and we promise the participation of top players of the world in large numbers. I’m very certain that wrestling enthusiasts would welcome the move despite all the challenges that have come our way,” said WFI president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.

9X Media sale: Pradeep Guha & Rajat Sharma rubbish reports

$

The entities that were said to be involved in acquisition talks have no clue about the development. It seems to be pure speculation.

The media and entertainment industry was since morning rife with speculation that India TV promoter Rajat Sharma is acquiring a controlling stake in the New Silk Route (NSR)-backed 9X Media. Reports emerged in the last few hours that also state the value of the deal was Rs 200 crore (Rs. 2,000 million).

9X Media’s CEO Pradeep Guha, however, rubbished this news. He told Indiantelevision.com, “All the reports are absolutely rubbish. We are not selling 9X Media.” When Rajat Sharma was contacted, he retorted: "I have no idea where these reports are coming from. I am out of the country. All these reports are absolutely false."

Though, Sharma has been keen on evaluating several opportunities to diversify the business portfolio of Independent News Service, which depends entirely on advertising revenue from India TV, acquiring 9X Media is not in his list. Yet. Sharma and his wife Ritu Dhawan are the largest shareholders of INS, which is the parent company of India TV. They own close to 60 per cent stake in the company.

According to reports that are making the rounds in the industry, Sharma may seek help for the fund transaction from existing investors in INS like the Silicon Valley-based media investor Keyur Patel who also owns a stake in NDTV through his CV Global Holdings, a Mauritius based investment arm.

NSR was earlier looking to sell its 80 per cent stake in 9X Media to Sony Pictures Networks in August. Its CEO Pradeep Guha directly owns five per cent stake whereas 9X Media Employee Trust has a 13 per cent stake. NSR has Drag Along/Tag rights over Guha’s shareholding and can cause him to sell his entire holding if the transaction materialises.

9X Media was founded in 2007 by Peter Mukerjea and Indrani Mukerjea and owns a bouquet of music channels that include regional language channels in Marathi and Punjabi. Its flagship channels are 9XM and 9X Jalwa.

The rise of India TV as India's leading news channel within a fairly short span of its existence owes a lot to the vision of its chairman and editor-in-chief Rajat Sharma who, along with his wife Ritu, leads a team of professionals.

Sharma, considered close to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, co-founded India TV with his wife Ritu Dhawan in April, 2004 from a swanky studio-cum-office in Film City, Noida. Sharma and Dhawan had set up their own production house, Independent News Service (INS), the parent company which owns India TV, in 1997 that has now transformed into a broadcasting company --- a la NDTV and TV18/Network18.
