Tamil Nadu CM Jayalalithaa passes away

Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, who suffered cardiac arrest yesterday, died on Monday at Chennai Apollo Hospitals. 
Yesterday, the hospital, where she was admitted on September 22, had said in a statement - "The honourable CM of Tamil Nadu, who is undergoing treatment at Apollo Hospitals, suffered a cardiac arrest this evening."
And late around midnight, Apollo Hospital's Joint Managing Director Sangita Reddy had tweeted - "TN CM is critical. Multi-speciality team trying everything including ecmo."
Soon after the Apollo's statement came, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh had spoken to Tamil Nadu Governor Vidyasagar Rao and had enquired about Jayalalithaa's health.
Rao, who is is also Governor of Maharashtra, had rushed to Chennai from Mumbai and went to the hospital.

Discovery India’s production Jawai: India’s Leopard Hills has won the Best Natural History / Wildlife Programme at the prestigious Asian Television Academy Awards 2016, held in Singapore.
Produced by Robin Roy Films, Jawai: India’s Leopard Hills combines state-of-the-art technology and sophisticated techniques to show leopards’ behaviour like never before.

ZEEL gets teleport licence to uplink TV channels

Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd (ZEEL) will set up its own teleport to uplink its fleet of television channels.
The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) has cleared ZEEL’s application to secure a teleport licence.
Earlier, ZEEL was using the teleport of Dish TV to uplink its TV channels.
“We had applied for a teleport licence. We have got the approval from the MIB. Though currently we are using Dish TV’s teleport infrastructure, we have decided to have our own facility. We will set up our own teleport from where we will uplink our channels. There will be no overlapping,” said a senior executive.
ZEEL obtained the teleport licence from the MIB on 29 November. The entertainment broadcasting company owns and operates a total of 37 standard-definition (SD) and high-definition (HD) channels across diverse genres and languages.
ZEEL already has a transmission facility at Noida, as per information on its website. The facility became operational in March 2002 with a single dedicated 9.3m antenna operating on the AsiaSat 3-S satellite with only one operational channel, Zee News. It now covers over 55 broadcast channels using dedicated teleports and a complex network of optical fibre links, satellite broadcast transmissions, content contribution links and internet streaming.
The Noida facility was fully revamped in 2012–13 with full HD core network, file-based media workflows, playouts with advanced media architecture, and interfaces to massive archival and retrieval systems dispersed among the Zee network production and transmission sites. Full file-based media workflows are achieved by an extended media network that encompasses even the production houses on the same platform.
The entire media network now operates on redundant high-speed optical fibre links and connects the playout hub to the Mumbai production facility, regional clusters, as well as Zee’s partners in media production, advertising and live events.
According to ZEEL, the uplink facility at Noida is equipped with state-of-the-art compression and automation systems for playout of content and its efficient delivery. Noida teleport features most advanced antenna switching system for high reliability and flexibility in operations, as well as automated monitoring of multi-satellite deliveries.
The MIB has so far permitted 81 teleports to uplink channels from India.

Zindagi to expand original programming hours

Zindagi, the premium entertainment channel from Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd (ZEEL), is expanding its original programming hours and planning to source content from countries other than just Turkey.
Zindagi will have five-and-a-half hours of original content daily from Monday to Saturday and its primetime will extend to 11.30 pm. There will be four Turkish shows of one hour each and three half-hour Hindi shows.

MN+ to air Oscar-winning director Steven Soderbergh’s films from 10 Dec

‘Director’s Cut’, the flagship property of Times Network’s premium English movie channel MN+, is all set to treat its viewers with a line-up of Hollywood movies by Oscar-winning director Steven Soderbergh.
The property will air Soderbergh’s films from 10 December onwards, every Saturday, at 9 pm. The director, known for his versatility in TV series and making films in genres like comedy-drama, horror, biographical, crime thrillers and films, came to spotlight with his film ‘Sex, Lies, and Videotape’ in 1989.
The movies that will feature on ‘Director’s Cut’ are ‘Traffic’, ‘The Good German’ and ‘The Informant’.
Multiple Academy Award-winner ‘Traffic’ is a criminal thriller exploring drug trafficking from the point of view of different people from diverse walks of life. The movie won critical acclaim and garnered the Academy Award for Steven Soderbergh as Best Director.
‘The Good German’ is a murder mystery encapsulating the story of an American military journalist in the post-war period who gets drawn into an investigation involving his former mistress and his driver. The film won a lot of appreciation from the audiences along with receiving a nomination for Best Director at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2007.
‘The Informant’ is a biographical comedy crime film based on the life of whistle blower Mark Whitacre who exposed his organisation’s price-fixing tactics.

Vodafone launches online gaming festival in India

As part of its 15-day online gaming fest in the country, telecom service provider Vodafone India is offering gaming enthusiasts a new gaming platform called ‘Vodafone U Game-a-Thon’.
Available on Google Play Store, the gaming extravaganza kicked off on 1 December and includes several gaming categories including sports, simulation, puzzles, among others.
Vodafone U is a lifestyle proposition designed especially for young Indians. Vodafone U claims to go beyond the conventional tariff plan and offers an array of telecom and non-telecom benefits that are best suited to the dynamic lifestyle of today’s youth.
Gaming has a huge Indian following. 71% smartphones users play mobile games on a regular basis, and it is the second-highest engaging category after chat apps. It is a growing trend among youth in India.
Vodafone India national brand head Siddharth Banerjee said, “Gaming is an identified passion point among today’s youth. Recent reports indicate that in the digital world, games are the second-highest engaging category in India after chat apps. Resonating with Vodafone U’s brand proposition of #FunAlwaysOn, we present ‘Vodafone U Game-A-Thon’, a unique platform where our customers will get a choice of 18 indie games to indulge and enjoy.”
Vodafone U customers can participate in the Vodafone U Game-A-Thon until 15 December 2016. Over 18 games are available to play in U mode to win prizes on all the 15 days across six categories—action, cricket, adventure, racing, puzzle and strategy.
India, the company said, has the second-largest developer community in the world, yet Indian developers have not reached the same scale as their global counterparts. Globally, gaming contributes to over 50% of app revenues and is the largest and most profitable segment of app business. To provide a fillip to the ecosystem, Vodafone has partnered the top 18 game developers in India to design a game-a-thon initiative.
Vodafone U Game-a-thon is currently live and has already driven more than one million downloads.
