Only Dish TV carrying HRD ministry's educational TV channels

Only Dish TV is carrying 32 educational television channels of the human resource development ministry in spite of appeals by ministry to all the private DTH operators.
An information and broadcasting ministry source told indiantelevision.com that the department of higher education of the HRD Ministry had approved the launch of ‘Swayam Prabha' -- a project for operationalising 32 Direct to Home (DTH) television channels for providing high quality educational content to all teachers, students and citizens across the country interested in lifelong learning.
However, Doordarshan’s FreeDish had not taken any channels as yet as it had space for only eighty channels and would consider adding new channels when it switches from MPEG 2 to MPEG4.
There will be new content of four hours every day in these channels, which would be telecast 6 times a day allowing the student to choose the time of his/her convenience.
The soft launch of the channels has already been done and all private DTH operators had been requested to carry the channels.
The HRD Ministry had also requested cable operators to carry these educational channels but with no success so far, the source said.

Airtel launches ‘V-Fiber’ in Mumbai to deliver superfast broadband

Bharti Airtel today announced launch of ‘V-Fiber’ in Mumbai, to offer superfast broadband to its customers.
V-Fiber is based on Vectorization and will deliver speeds of up to 100 Mbps (megabits per second) over Airtel’s existing broadband footprint in the city.
It will transform the home broadband for Airtel customers with consistently superfast data speeds and enable HD video streaming, heavy file downloads and uploads in a multi-device environment (over Wi-Fi).
Customers will need to upgrade to a new V-Fiber modem.
“Airtel is the first operator in India to deploy Vectorization technology, which turbo charges the last mile copper with advanced noise elimination technology to deliver superfast data speeds. With V-Fiber, Airtel has brought fiber into colonies and neighbourhoods and upgraded exchanges,” the company said.
Existing Airtel broadband customers can upgrade to V-Fiber speeds to enjoy superfast data speeds at no extra monthly cost. If they are not happy with the service within one month, Airtel will refund the modem charges and the amount will be adjusted in the next bill cycle.
New customers can choose exciting V-Fiber plans starting from Rs 899 and can subsequently avail the 3 months unlimited offer. Existing and new customers can register their requests at http://www.airtel.in/vfiber or call on 18001030121.
V-Fiber is a green technology and there is no new wiring and drilling required at an existing customer’s premises.
Bharti Airtel CEO – Mumbai Sameer Batra said, “We are delighted to bring ‘V-Fiber’ to our customers in Mumbai, as part of our endeavour to deliver best-in-class broadband experience to users. With ‘V-Fiber’, we are all set to offer an altogether transformed experience on our future ready network to the digitally savvy homes. This solution offers a very quick and convenient upgrade to the customer. Our innovative myHome Rewards program and free voice calling facility will certainly add to the delight of Mumbai’s digital homes.”
myHome Rewards
Airtel’s ‘myHome Rewards’ programme provides free additional data benefit of 5 GB per month for every other Airtel service connection – postpaid mobile or digital TV (DTH) – within the home/family.
Customers can avail this offer for their existing as well as new Airtel postpaid mobile and digital TV connections. So, if an Airtel broadband home has two Airtel postpaid mobiles and one Airtel digital TV connection, then 15 GB free additional data will be added to their broadband account every month.
Unlimited free voice calls
Airtel also announced the launch of unlimited free voice calling for all broadband customers. The facility is now available across broadband plans and customers can make unlimited free voice calls to any network across the country at no extra cost.
Airtel V-Fiber deployment is a part of Airtel’s nationwide network transformation initiative – Project Leap started last year. Under the initiative, Airtel is also augmenting its 550,000 km of domestic and international fiber/submarine cable capacity in order to drive down latency, improve customer experience and serve the growing demand of data services in years to come. The company is also increasing caching of content at its data centres to improve data experience for customers.

Sony Pictures Networks India's new strategic decision is to add entertaining and engaging channels catering to a variety of viewers to its existing bouquet next year.
Sony has been working on its plans to expand its portfolio by adding 10 new channels which will include five sports channels. The remainder will be divided between kids, music and infotainment genres. SPN India is awaiting regulatory approval.
Speaking to Indiantelevision.com, Sony Pictures Networks CEO NP Singh said, “The company expanded its portfolio in 2016. New channels are coming in a few months". Singh further added, "We are integrating five Ten Sports channels, HD music channel, kids channel and infotainment channel.”
In the beginning of 2016, Sony added two channels -- Sony ESPN and Sony ESPN HD to its sports bouquet in collaboration with ESPN. Later that year, SPN India launched its third movie channel -- Sony Wah and also came up with Sony Le Plex, an English movie channel.
In August 2016, the network announced a deal to acquire Ten Sports Network from Zee Entertainment Enterprises Limited (ZEE) and its subsidiaries for US$ 385 million. The acquisition added South Asia's leading sports network to SPN's portfolio.
The year seems to have been satisfying for Sony Pictures. Talking about the network’s flagship channel Sony Entertainment Television, Singh said, "The year has been good for the network. We have been able to successfully achieve leadership on weekends. Also, we have seen the audience accepting our fiction shows." Singh added, "In the next six months, I am sure, we will see a surge in viewership on weekdays too. We climbed up from number six to three, and hope Sony will continue to grow from there.”
The channel is bringing back the ninth season of one its iconic shows Indian Idol on 24 December.

A Naruto and Boruto joint stage event at Jump Festa 2017 on Saturday has formally announced that a live-action film production based on the Naruto manga is in progress.
American entertainment news platform The Tracking Board reported in July 2015 that Hollywood media company Lionsgate had won the rights for the adaptation. Japanese entertainment news platform Eiga Natalie confirmed that Lionsgate holds distribution rights for the film.
The Jump Festa stage event also confirmed that commercials director Michael Gracey will helm production with the involvement of mangaka Masashi Kishimoto. Gracey is currently directing a biographical musical drama film depicting the life of American circus showman P. T. Barnum.
Screenwriters Michael Jelenic and Aaron Horvath from Teen Titans Go!, as well as Chris Shafer and Paul Vicknair, are drafting a story based on the original manga. Marvel Studios founder Avi Arad and his son Ari are credited as producers for the film. Production also involves Zareh Nalbandian, chief executive of Australian animation and visual effects company Animal Logic.

Hindi news channels taking the free-to-air (FTA) route, subscription revenue is drying up for news broadcasters. Zee Media Corporation Ltd (ZMCL), the largest pay TV revenue earner, is facing this inevitable trend. The company’s subscription revenue, which stood at Rs 102.39 crore (Rs 1.02 billion) in FY16, could shrink almost half this financial year. The impact has been felt immediately since ZMCL’s flagship Hindi news channel Zee News went FTA. In the fiscal second quarter ended 30 September 2016, subscription income fell 39.9% to Rs 16.37 crore compared to Rs 27.24 crore a year ago.
After Aaj Tak went on Freedish, the quarterly subscription revenue loss for TV Today Network is estimated to be in the region of Rs 3 crore. But by being on Freedish, the channel’s rural viewership share has increased and it is in a position to negotiate better terms

Discovery calls off deal to buy Sanjeev Kapoor’s FoodFood channel

$

0
Seven months after signing an agreement to gobble up Chef Sanjeev Kapoor’s culinary channel FoodFood, Discovery Communications has decided to walk out on the deal.
Discovery’s refusal to take a bite means that FoodFood will be left with Indian owners Kapoor and Sandeep Goyal. Though marginally profitable, funding the food speciality network’s expansion is going to be an issue.
Malaysia-based Astro has already exited the venture, a source said. The shares of Turmeric Vision, the company which owns and operates FoodFood, have been transferred to Kapoor and Goyal. While Kapoor owns 80% stake in Turmeric Vision, 20% rests with Goyal.
“Astro has sold its stake in Turmeric Vision. The shares have been transferred to Kapoor and Goyal,” the source added.
Earlier, Astro held 73% stake in Turmeric Vision while Kapoor and Goyal’s Mogae Consultants owned the remaining stake.
The deal with Discovery involved a two-way process. Initially, Kapoor and Goyal were to buy out Astro’s stake in Turmeric Vision. The shareholding would change to 80% in favour of Kapoor while Goyal would own the remaining portion. Discovery would subsequently buy out the shares of Goyal and acquire a major chunk of Kapoor’s holding. In the new structure, Discovery would own 74% stake and Kapoor the remaining 26%.
“At this time, we can confirm that we are not entering into the partnership with FoodFood as announced earlier this year. India remains a global priority market for Discovery, and we will continue to explore opportunities as we expand our business and accelerate our strategic growth investments here,” a Discovery spokesperson said.
Discovery did not explain why it was calling off the acquisition.
After announcing the deal in May, Discovery had started the integration process. The distribution and ad sales functions were moved to the Discovery team.
The acquisition of FoodFood would have meant Discovery having two channels in the lifestyle genre. The global conglomerate owns TLC, which competes with a breed of homegrown lifestyle channels including NDTV Good Times and Essel Group’s Living Foodz. The purchase of FoodFood would have given Discovery a local channel in the food genre.
Astro had invested $30 million in Turmeric Vision. In FY15, Turmeric Vision reported a loss of about Rs 10 crore (Rs 100 million) on a turnover of Rs 30 crore (Rs 300 million).
Incidentally, this marks Discovery’s new India head Karan Bajaj’s first major decision since he assumed office in October this year.

History TV18 to air miniseries ‘The Bible’ on 24 Dec

Infotainment channel History TV18 is set to air the 10-part miniseries, ‘The Bible’, on 24 December at 9 pm.
The miniseries will feature some of the best-known stories written from Noah’s Ark to the Exodus, and the life and resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth in the Bible.
Instead of presenting the Bible’s epic tales through the lens of faith or religion, the series immerses the viewer in the stories in a new way. It is told in the first person, from the point of view of the heroes and villains whose decisions shaped both Old and New Testaments. From Abraham to Moses, from Noah to David, through Jesus and the Apostles, ‘The Bible’ captures the struggles of real people dealing with real issues in a way a modern audience can relate to.
Keith David narrates the series that stars actress Roma Downey (as Mother Mary), who also serves as a co-executive producer along with her husband, Mark Burnett, who is the creator and producer of this show. Portuguese TV star Diogo Morgado (Jesus), Darwin Shaw (Peter) and Sebastian Knapp (John) will join them in the show.
