Australia vs Pakistan, 2nd Test

START TIME

5:00 AM

After such an unforgettable back end of the first Test, there is a swirl of anticipation ahead of the Boxing Day Test between Australia and Pakistan. The historic Test is always the centerpiece of the Australian cricket summer and circled as one of the country's most cherished sporting dates. Apart from the Ashes Tests, this affair at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) looms as the most intoxicating for many years, with more than 60,000 spectators tipped for the Boxing Day.

The final couple of sessions in Brisbane gripped the entirety of the cricket world and has fuelled excitement for the second Test. It has been an eternity since a competitive series ensued between these teams and, tantalisingly, it feels like something special is simmering.

However, Australia will aim to be party poopers and regain lost momentum after thoroughly dominating the opening three days of the first Test. Australia's vaunted attack was surprisingly stymied by determined Pakistani batting, raising concerns of an over reliance on spearheads Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazelwood.

Third seamer Jackson Bird was patchy, while Nathan Lyon, the off-spinner, once again struggled when it mattered the most. For more bowling depth, and as a possible replacement for struggling No. 6 batsman Nic Maddinson, Australia had called up uncapped all-rounder Hilton Cartwright, but have opted to stick with the same XI that featured in Brisbane.

Meanwhile, Pakistan will be looking to build on the goodwill fostered from Brisbane, after a sluggish start to the series. Their susceptible batting line-up has been injected with much-needed confidence and will be looking for an improved performance from captain Misbah-ul-Haq, who scored just nine runs in the first Test. Exciting No. 3 batsman Babar Azam also struggled in the first Test and will be needed if Pakistan have to replicate their astounding second innings.

Surprisingly, Pakistan's high-octane bowling arsenal failed to trouble an inexperienced Australian batting line-up, which impressively flourished in Brisbane despite the continued failures of imposing opener David Warner.

Pakistan will likely need to change their one dimensional pace attack in a bid for more versatility and would be wise to utilise star leg spinner Yasir Shah in an attacking fashion. In Brisbane, he bowled negatively due to a defensive field drawn up by Misbah, in what was a head-scratching tactic that ultimately backfired.

The second Test at the MCG, one of the iconic sports grounds in the world, has all the ingredients for another memorable affair. The pitch, which should be fairly flat and could favour spin in the latter stages, should suit the tourists, who are extremely dangerous when their tails are up.

However, the mercurial Pakistanis have often disappointed when expectations are high, so one wouldn't be surprised if an anti-climax ensues. Fingers crossed, on the hallowed MCG, another classic encounter plays out during the most beloved fixture on the international calendar.

What to expect: Typical fickle Melbourne weather is predicted for the Test. Hot temperatures, around the mid-30s, are forecast for the opening three days. However, rain is predicted for the back end of the Test, particularly on day five.

Team News

Australia: After a gruelling back end to the first Test, where they spent 145 overs on the field, there was innuendo that Australia would consider resting Starc and Hazelwood. However, both will play, and so will the remaining nine that featured in Brisbane as the hosts announced an unchanged XI on the eve of the fixture.

Pakistan: In Brisbane, Pakistan's pace bowing, the team's undeniable strength, struggled and was one-dimensional, containing three left-armers. Right-armers Imran Khan and Sohail Khan could get a chance in Melbourne, most likely for Rahat Ali who was the least impressive of the Pakistani quicks.

What they said

"Boxing Day Test gets everyone ready to go. Everyone's feeling good, recovered, well and ready." - Mitchell Starc

"We are quite confident and very united about winning this Test and levelling the series." - Sami Aslam

Did you know?

- Pakistan have not beaten Australia in a Test since 1995. Since then, they have lost 10 straight Tests in Australia. Pakistan has never won a series Down Under.

- Two of Pakistan's four Test victories in Australia have been at the MCG. Still, Australia holds the advantage winning five matches from nine Tests (two draws) at the MCG. Pakistan's last victory in Melbourne was in 1981.

- Misbah-ul-Haq needs 116 runs for 5000 career Test runs, while David Warner requires 51 runs to reach the same landmark.

South Africa vs Sri Lanka, 1st Test

START TIME

1:30 PM

As South Africa prepare for the first Test against Sri Lanka on Boxing Day, it seems a good time to reflect on the difference that a year can make. The corresponding match last season saw the Proteas lose to England by 241 runs, throwing their Test team into a full-blown crisis. South Africa went on to use 17 players in the four-match series, as the selectors stumbled around in search of the combination that might take the team forward into a new era. Hashim Amla quit as captain midway through, and the series was perhaps best summed up by Quinton de Kock when he injured his knee whilst walking his dogs on the eve of a match.

Ahead of the three-match contest against Sri Lanka this summer, South Africa are in a rather better space. Not only do they have a settled side, but they look strong even without the availability of AB de Villiers, Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel. De Villiers' selfless decision to give up a captaincy that he wanted so badly, has given Faf du Plessis the position, and few would argue that he is the best man for the job, especially after leading the Proteas to a third straight series victory in Australia.

In effect, South Africa have used the experience of last summer to achieve a better standing. While the selectors appeared to be fumbling around in the dark at the time, they have at least emerged with a greater understanding of what their best team looks like.

Stephen Cook was only brought in for the fourth Test against England but has proven his worth as a dogged opening partner for Dean Elgar. De Kock's unpredictability has been embraced rather than eyed with suspicion, allowing him to develop into one of the world's most intimidating wicketkeeper-batsmen. Stiaan van Zyl, Dane Piedt and Hardus Viljoen have fallen by the wayside as better alternatives have emerged. Meanwhile, Kagiso Rabada and Temba Bavuma have kicked on from that breakthrough series against England.

On the face of it then, it is difficult to see Sri Lanka getting a look-in - especially from the viewpoint of your average South African supporter. It has been five years since Sri Lanka last visited these shores, and Angelo Mathews, Rangana Herath, Dinesh Chandimal and Kaushal Silva are the only survivors from that tour, leaving many unfamiliar faces. Yet Sri Lanka too have enjoyed a sharp turnaround over the past 12 months, rebounding from four consecutive defeats to win their last five Tests by convincing margins.

In that context, Kusal Mendis' extraordinary maiden Test century against Australia at Pallekele takes on even greater significance, given that it sparked the win which started that run. The 21-year-old is just one among a fine crop of young batsmen, who have sprouted as Sri Lanka are coming to terms with the retirements of Mahela Jayawardene, Kumar Sangakkara and Tillakaratne Dilshan. All of the newcomers made the most of a quiet tour of Zimbabwe recently in the absence of Mathews and Dinesh Chandimal, to cement their places in the side, but will now face a far sterner challenge. New Zealand proved earlier this year that thumping victories in Zimbabwe were little indication of ability, when they moved south of the Limpopo River.

At least, this group of tourists have been allowed a friendlier starting point to the series than their 2011 predecessors, who encountered the classic South African welcome for Asian sides: an opening Test on the highveld, on a greentop. They lost the toss, were stuck in to bat, and lost by an innings. This time around, the series starts on the slower surface of St. George's Park, moves to the slightly quicker Newlands and then finishes at the Wanderers. "I suppose from a Sri Lankan perspective they wouldn't mind starting (in Port Elizabeth)," du Plessis admitted. "We would have preferred Johannesburg or a Centurion or even a Kingsmead, where it can be quick and bouncy and you can leave a bit of grass on the wicket. But we do play really well there and have a really good record there, so we'll run on that."

South Africa have won two of their last three Tests at St. George's Park, with a rain-affected draw against the West Indies being the odd match out. With the better pace attack, they will start as heavy favourites given the conditions, and will hope that Hashim Amla can make a return to form. After 98 runs in five innings in Australia, he is certainly due, although du Plessis remains predictably unruffled. "It's going to happen that you get out of form and you get out to good balls, but guys who are batting well at that point in time must make sure they score the big runs," he said. "Whether someone like Hashim had a series where he did not score the runs that he wanted to, is not as important to me as making sure that Quinton, who was in form, cashed in like he did."

Mathews might send a similar message to his batsmen on their first tour of South Africa, where getting past the first 30 balls often unlocks a passage to good batting conditions. The tourists managed that feat in a warm-up match in Potchefstroom, but that was against an attack with minimal credibility. Facing up to a resurgent South African side hardened by the experiences of last summer, will be a far more formidable prospect.

Bangladesh tour of New Zealand, 2016-17

START TIME

3:30 AM

Punching above their weight has been the recurring theme of Bangladesh in recent times. Their sensational winning streak at home began way back in November 2014 and lasted till England broke it in October 2016. During this golden period, Bangladesh managed to slay stronger sides like India, Pakistan and South Africa, and also gave a good account of themselves in the 2015 World Cup. With each passing series win, Bangladesh's biggest gain has been the fact that the oppositions that are considered superior - based on reputation and history - are now wary of them.

The upcoming assignment in the testing conditions of New Zealand, their first away tour since late 2014, comes at the right time for a side that has been on the rise. While flourishing in home comfort has enhanced Bangladesh's reputation and given their boisterous bunch of fans the long-awaited respite through results, success in alien conditions will help them attain a new level.

New Zealand, on the other hand, will seek refuge in the same comforts that has catapulted Bangladesh to recent highs. After losing 2-3 in India, Kane Williamson's side was handed a 0-3 drubbing in Australia. A winning start against a tricky opposition like Bangladesh will go a long way in negating their recent travails in One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and settling the home side down for the series which also includes three Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) and two Tests.

New Zealand enjoyed a superior record over Bangladesh in the early 2000s, but will now be wary of their opposition who have beaten them in their last two meetings - 4-0 in 2010 and 3-0 in 2013 - both in Bangladesh.

When: New Zealand vs Bangladesh, 1st ODI on Monday (December 26) at 11:00 AM Local (03:30 AM IST)

Where: Hagley Oval, Christchurch

What to expect: A maximum of 20 degrees Celsius is anticipated on Monday

Team News

New Zealand: Coach Mike Hesson confirmed that Trent Boult and Tim Southee will be given breaks before the Tests but both will lead the bowling attack on Monday. Lockie Ferguson, with his searing pace, will also be a handy option against a batting line-up that could be brittle in the colder climes of New Zealand.

By his lofty standards, Kane Williamson endured a low key 2016 in ODIs. After amassing 1376 runs - the second best tally - in 26 innings at an average of 57.33 in 2015, the New Zealand captain has managed just 559 runs in 15 fixtures at 37.26 this year. Understandably, he was allowed to take a break after the tour of Australia and returns rejuvenated to bring down the curtains on the year, with a better showing with the bat, against Bangladesh.

New Zealand's biggest concern during their defeat to Australia was their inability to match their Trans-Tasman rival's batting efforts. Against Bangladesh's tidy bowling attack, the likes of Williamson, Martin Guptill and Tom Latham will have to help raise the bar for the home side. Luke Ronchi's return, after being dropped for Australia's tour, strengthens the middle-order as the wicketkeeper-batsman averages 37 at home, as opposed to a measly 12 away.

Bangladesh: In bowler-friendly conditions of Christchurch, all eyes will be on Mustafizur Rahman. The lanky fast bowler, who has recovered from the spate of injuries suffered after a successful maiden season in the Indian Premier League, picked up two wickets for 39 runs in seven overs during the warm-up match against New Zealanders at Whangarei three days ago. It also remains to be seen if young spinner Mehedi Hasan Miraz, who made an impressive start to his Test career against England, is awarded his ODI cap.

Bangladesh's fate in the series will be heavily dependent on how their batsmen perform against New Zealand's quicks. The likes of Tamim Iqbal, who has scored at an average of 76.96 in ODIs this year, and Shakib Al Hasan will need to be the flag-bearers in New Zealand.

What they said:

"Hess (coach Mike Hesson) and I have spoken a bit about that series. I suppose when you go away on a tour and get beaten like we did in Aussie, there's a number of things you would have liked to have done a little bit better. It's important we learn from it and become a better side going forward." - Kane Williamson.
