Intex has launched a new smartphone in its Aqua series, called the Aqua Costa. The smartphone is listed on company’s official website and is priced at Rs 5,499. The smartphone will be available in champagne, grey and white color options. The Aqua Costa is one of the most affordable smartphones to offer Android 6.0 Marshmallow out-of-the-box. But it doesn’t support 4G or VoLTE feature which is now increasingly becoming popular, and is available on much lesser priced smartphones.

Intex has launched a slew of 3G smartphones in the past. Some of the recent 3G smartphones are the Intex Aqua Q7N Pro, Intex Aqua Sense 5.1, Intex Cloud Tread, Intex Aqua Pride and Aqua Q7N among others. These smartphones are priced between Rs 3,999 and Rs 4,999. The Intex Aqua Costa is perhaps the most expensive 3G smartphone Intex has launched in recent weeks.

Intex Aqua Costa specifications
The Intex Aqua Costa smartphone features a 5-inch FWVGA display size with 854 x 480 pixels resolution. The smartphone offers two finger touch, 196 PPI of pixel density and 16.7M display colors. Under the hood runs MediaTek MT6580M Quad-core Cortex A7 processor, clocked at 1.3GHz paired with Mali 400 graphics. The Aqua Costa is paired with 2GB of RAM and also on offer is 8GB of internal storage which can be further be expanded via microSD card slot up to 32GB.

The Intex Aqua Costa smartphone sports a 5-megapixel autofocus rear camera LED flash and a 2-megapixel front camera for selfie lovers. The rear camera can record 720p videos. Some of the other features of the camera include Face Beauty Mode, Gesture Capture, HDR, Self Timer and Zero Shutter Delay. The sensors on the device includes Proximity Sensor and Light Sensor.

The smartphone comes with a 2,200mAh battery that the company claims is good enough to last up to 11 hours of talktime and 200 hours of standby time. On the connectivity front, the smartphone comes with dusl-SIM and offers 3G-only network, Bluetooth v4.0, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, GPS / A-GPS, FM Radio, 3.5mm audio jack and micro USB 2.0 port. The Aqua Costa is powered by Android 6.0 Marshmallow out-of-the-box with pre-installed applications such as Saavn, Opera Mini, News Point, Online Software Update and Matrabhasha.

The smartphone will face tough competition in the likes of Xiaomi Redmi 3s and Reliance Digital LYF Wind 1 which are priced at Rs 6,999 and Rs 6,899. While both the smartphones are priced at Rs 1,000 extra they offer much better specifications than the Intex Aqua Costa. One of the main highlights of the competitions is that both the smartphones support 4G with VoLTE.

In comparison, the Reliance Digital LYF Wind 1 has a 5-inch HD display, 64-bit Snapdragon 410 quad-core processor clocked at 1.2GHz along with Adreno 306 GPU, 1GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage that can be further expanded. It comes with an 8-megapixel rear camera, 5-megapixel camera with beauty mode. The smartphone also comes with a 2,300mAh battery, and runs on Android 5.1 Lollipop. On the other hand the Redmi 3s features a 5-inch HD display, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 430 octa-core processor along with 2GB of RAM. The smartphone also comes with onboard storage of 16GB which is further expandable up to 32GB via microSD card. It runs Android based MIUI 7. India 's data tariffs much higher than offer developing countries; scope for 75% cut

$

0
If you thought data tariff in India offered by telecom service providers was cheap, a top global consulting firm focused on digital media not only says it is pretty steep even by developed nations' standards, but also calls for a 75-per cent cut to push usage.

"India's current data tariff (based on current average revenue per GB of Rs 228) is significantly higher than that of relevant developed and developing countries, when adjusted for the per-capita incomes to normalize for affordability levels," says Analysys Mason.

"India's data tariffs (price of 1GB pack) as percentage of GNI (gross national income) per capita is currently 2.6 per cent -- whereas, on an average, the developed economies' data tariff, as a percentage of GNI per capita, currently stands at 0.4-0.5 per cent," it adds.

In other words, an average user of data in India spends 2.6 per cent of her/his annual income to consume 1GB of data per month -- which is way higher than the average of 0.2-0.4 per cent of the annual income that is spent by their counterparts in developed markets.

"Our analysis concludes that a 75 per cent cut in data tariffs (average revenue per GB of Rs 57) alone could increase the user base to 645-667 million SIMs, and the level of monthly data usage to around 4.2-4.3 GB per SIM in 2019-20," the Analysys Mason study says, in the given scenario.

Interestingly, the study says that telecom companies won't actually lose out by lowering tariffs.

It underscores that in terms of affordability, an average monthly increase in data usage to 10.2 GB at a discounted tariff of Rs 57 per GB, with 10 per cent contribution from voice, translates into a total increase in monthly average revenue per user of Rs 645.

The study has come against the backdrop of a price war among telecom operators on data, even as a new player -- Reliance Jio -- that has pumped $21 billion into its new telecom venture, is now gearing up for the commercial launch in the near future.

The study does not name any Indian telecom operator, but says while 3G capacity in India has been improving rapidly, that in the case of 4G has actually exceeded demand for the first time, thanks to the new entrant's (read Reliance Jio's) extensive network roll-out.

"From a network availability perspective, the abundance of 4G supply could change the consumers' consumption behaviour for the first time in the country, as subscribers get access to higher quality high-speed broadband networks."

Another plus point which consumers can look forward to is in terms of devices. The study says with rapid convergence of 3G into 3G+4G devices, and a steep decline in their prices, the availability and affordability will stop being a barrier to in the the coming years.

But it does not have much to say on content. It finds that even though this segment, particularly short-format videos, has driven the growth in mobile data usage in India, the availability has been a challenge, especially among the non-English speaking masses.

"Google estimates that next 300 million Net users in India will come from non-English speaking population. However, at present, the supply is heavily skewed towards English content, which is of little relevance to the next wave of Internet users in India."

Reliance Jio to launch on September 1; Open Up free trial for everyone

Reliance Jio has been hogging the limelight for all the right and the wrong reasons, and it is something that most of us are looking forward to. With the ongoing preview offer raking in as many as 4 Million new connections, Reliance is finally geared up for the commercial launch. There were rumors about Jio launching on 15th August (which we had categorically dismissed), and now, our sources have confirmed that the Jio launch will happen tomorrow, i.e September 1st, 2016. The launch coincides with the Annual General Meeting of the company.

It is for the first time in India that a telecom operator has received such an overwhelming response on any of their offerings. Ironically, it was Reliance who started offering CDMA on contracts almost a decade ago. Post the commercial launch, one would be able to buy the Jio SIM just like any other SIM cards in the market. However, all new buyers will be treated with a Trial period offer which will most likely offer unlimited 4G LTE data, voice and SMS for a period of 90-days. However we are still not sure if it’ll be a commercial launch or a soft launch, as Jio is yet to resolve the interconnection issue with other telecom operators, which is affecting the voice calls.

We also hear that Mukesh Ambani will be making some groundbreaking announcements at the launch tomorrow, details of which are still not known. Also, the company is expected to reveal the Jio prepaid and postpaid tariffs post the commercial launch. Needless to say, Reliance Jio has one of the best coverage as of now and it will surprise you by offering 4G LTE even in the remotest areas, something that the other Telcos including Airtel and Vodafone are yet to achieve. It is possible that we will witness a huge number of ports from other operators once Jio is commercially launched.

As per COAI, Reliance has been taking advantage of the loophole in the license conditions which fail to put a cap on the number of days a free trial can be given. Now with the commercial launch finally happening, the Jio Preview Offer will possibly be renamed to Jio Trial Offer with same set of privileges like unlimited 4G data, unlimited voice calls and unlimited SMS along with the complete suite of Reliance Jio apps being offered for anyone for a period of 90-days along with the free SIM. But then, there has been HUGE demand already under partner preview offer, resulting in delayed activations and server issues. We are not sure how well prepared Jio is to open up the network for everyone to try starting September 1st.

Airtel Rolls Out LTE-A in Mumbai, Plans in other cities to offer up to 135Mbps Speed

New Delhi :Bharti Airtel said that it has deployed LTE-Advanced using carrier aggregation across TD-LTE and FDD-LTE bands in Mumbai, to virtually create larger airwave blocks, thereby offering faster and more stable 4G services for users. The telco now plans to extend the deployment of 4G Advanced in other geographies in the coming months.

The telco had earlier rolled out LTE-Advanced across TDD-LTE and FDD-LTE bands in Kerala using Nokia telecom gear.

"With today's rollout, Mumbai is among the few cities globally to have high speed data services over 4G Advanced," the company said.
Airtel launched its 4G services in Mumbai in May 2015 on the 2300 Mhz band using the TD LTE standard and recently added capacity on the 1800 Mhz band using FD LTE.

Customers with mobile devices that support 4G Advanced or LTE-A will be able to enjoy 4G data speeds of up to 135 Mbps, the telco said, adding that the deployment will offer superior indoors and outdoors coverage.

Under the carrier aggregation deployment, the capacities of TD LTE (2300 MHz spectrum band) and FD LTE (1800 MHz spectrum band) have been combined to enable better spectrum utilisation and efficiency.

LTE-A promises to deliver two to three times faster speeds than today's 4G LTE, using a process that allows operators to pool spectrum across inter and intra bands, thus providing better consumer experience to the users whose device possess those capabilities.

"Airtel has consistently been ahead of the curve when it comes to innovation and technology deployment, in order to deliver a superior mobile experience to its customers. Airtel has led the rollout of 4G services in India and with the deployment of 4G Advanced, we are taking a quantum leap in delivering a superior mobile broadband experience to our customers," According to Ajai Puri, Director - Operations (India & South Asia), Bharti Airtel, said in a statement.

The deployment is a part of Airtel's ongoing network transformation program - Project Leap, under which Airtel plans to invest Rs 60,000 crores over the next three years.

Mukesh Ambani- led Reliance Jio also started carrier aggregation trials across all bands. "Trials started for Carrier Aggregation in all RJIL frequency bands," Reliance Industries Limited had earlier said.

Lenovo-owned Motorola has announced the Moto Z Play smartphone, a $499 (approximately Rs. 33,500) smartphone that's a more affordable variant of the Moto Z) smartphone that was announced in June this year. The Moto Z and the Moto Z Play come with Moto Mods, a modular system that lets users extend the functionality of the smartphone.

Alongside the Moto Z Play, Motorola also unveiled a new Moto Mod developed with Hasselblad, called the True Zoom. The Moto Z Play and True Zoom were unveiled at the sidelines of IFA 2016 in Berlin on Wednesday, and will be on display at the company’s booth at the conference.
(Also see: Moto Z Play vs. Moto Z)
The Moto Z Play features a 5.5-inch full-HD Super Amoled screen, and is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 SoC with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage. It also has a 3510mAh battery, a 16-megapixel primary camera and a 5-megapixel secondary camera. Motorola has also stated that the Mods are designed to work with all variants of the Moto Z, including the Moto Z Play and the currently Verizon-exclusive Moto Z Force smartphones. They will also be compatible with up to three future generations of Moto Z smartphones.
(Also see: Moto Z Play full specifications)
The Hasselblad True Zoom Mod is a big boost to the Moto Mods system, allowing users to enhance the camera capabilities of the smartphone with an easy-to-attach accessory. It features a 13-megapixel sensor, 10X optical zoom, xenon flash, auto back-up of pictures and the ability to shoot in RAW format. It has a dedicated shutter button and a control for zoom as well, allowing you to shoot without physically interacting with the phone’s screen. Additionally, the Mod uses the phone’s standard camera app, which can detect the presence of the Hasselblad mod and provide the additional controls and features directly on-screen.
The Hasselblad True Zoom Moto Mod is the latest addition to Motorola’s unique approach to modular smartphones, adding to the existing Mods that were announced earlier this year. This includes the JBL SoundBoost which adds improved sound to the phone, Insta-Share projector, Incipio OffGrid Power Pack that adds a 2200mAh battery to the device, and Style Shells which change the look and texture of the phone.
All of the products in the Moto Z and Moto Mods are expected to go on sale in September, but no specific pricing or availability details have been shared for India as yet.
