Bindass to rebrand, add 10 shows

Entering its 10th year, Hindi youth GEC Bindass will be rebranding by introducing a 3D background to its logo that has been developed in-house. The channel will change its entire packaging starting 5 November and add 10 new shows to its programming line-up, five of which are under production. While last year Bindass had become a platform-agnostic brand, the focus this year is more on storytelling by creating content that is relatable for the youth.  Beer

We had launched ‘Girl in the City’ first on Facebook, followed by TV and YouTube. Taking our cue from that, we are going to make sure that we create shows that deliver across platforms in various lengths and formats. The element of social media has been done before, but this time we are doing it more in sync with the story and it is been done by the stars themselves,” added Gandhi.

Prasar Bharati will launch a new channel for the north-eastern region. Named DD Arun Prabha, the channel is slated for launch on 25 December. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) has earmarked Rs 7 crore (Rs 70 million) for the channel. The channel will air programmes on the diverse culture of the north-eastern states. “North-east is an area that needs our focus. There are so many states with such diverse cultures and languages.
We had asked the government a few years ago that every state in that region needs a separate channel, given the diversity,” Prasar Bharati chairperson A. Surya Prakash told Mint. Prasar Bharati board took the decision to launch the channel in a meeting on 17 October.
Doordarshan already runs DD North-East, which telecasts entertainment and information-based programmes in Assamese, Bengali, English and other languages of the north-east region. “The existing channel has not been able to meet the cultural needs of the area because of its cultural diversity and multiple languages and dialects,” Prakash told the business daily.

MIB penalises NDTV India with one-day ban for Pathankot coverage

$

Hindi news channel NDTV India has been banned for a day by an inter-ministerial committee of the Information & Broadcasting Ministry for allegedly revealing ‘strategically sensitive’ details while covering the Pathankot terrorist attack. The ministry is likely to direct NDTV India to be taken off air for a day on 9 November. The ministry had issued a show-cause notice to the channel for violating the content code by providing graphic details of the anti-terror operation in Pathankot. According to the IMC, the coverage by NDTV India had compromised the security of the country. The committee felt that ‘such crucial information’ could have been readily picked by terrorist handlers and had the potential to “cause massive harm not only to national security, but also to the lives of civilians and defence personnel.” The channel has been accused of revealing information on the ammunition stockpiled in the airbase, MIGs, fighter planes, rocket launchers, mortars, helicopters and fuel tanks. In its reply, the channel had said that the matter was subjective interpretation and most of the information they had put out was already in public domain in print, electronic and social media.
The committee, however, felt that the channel “appeared to give out the exact location of the remaining terrorists with regard to the sensitive assets in their vicinity” when they telecast in real time. “Such crucial information could have been readily picked by their handlers, which had the potential to cause massive harm not only to national security but also to the lives of civilians and defence personnel,” the committee said.
While stating that the violation stood proven beyond doubt, the committee said that the violation could even attract a penalty of taking the channel off air for 30 days. Since this is first such violation by NDTV India, the committee has recommended a token punishment. “The IMC recommends that at least a token penalty of one day’s off-air needed to be awarded to the TV channel, so that they do not get away completely for this huge indiscretion and violation of specific rule or guideline relating to national security concerns,” the order reads.

Govt hands NDTV India 24-hr ban for breach of content code

$

In what is being viewed in certain quarters as an assault on media freedom reminiscent of Rajiv Gandhi government’s bid to gag media in late 1980s, the Prannoy Roy and family-controlled NDTV India, has been directed by the government to go off air for 24 hours from 9 November 2016 as a penalty for breaching telecast norms related to security issues.
NDTV is exploring all options against this 24-hour ban with opinion split on the issue. While a section of views on social media supported the government action, many who part of the Indian media criticised it saying it reminded them of Indira Gandhi-imposed Emergency in India in 1977.
Confirming the recent development, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) sources said that Hindi news channel NDTV India has been accused of airing images and revealing information regarding defence locations while covering the Pathankot terrorist attack a few months back. The sources added that NDTV India was given a chance by an inter-ministerial committee (IMC) of the government to put forth its viewpoint on the allegations and was found wanting.
Indiantelevision.com made futile attempts to get in touch with NDTV for independent reactions, including newly-anointed group CEO KVL Narayan Rao and his predecessor Vikram Chandra.
However, in a statement put out by NDTV on its website ( http://www.ndtv.com/communication/ndtv-s...nst-our-hi... ), the company said, “The order of the MIB has been received. It is shocking that NDTV has been singled out in this manner. Every channel and newspaper had similar coverage. In fact NDTV's coverage was particularly balanced. After the dark days of the Emergency when the press was fettered, it is extraordinary that NDTV is being proceeded against in this manner. NDTV is examining all options in this matter.”
The IMC, the government sources said, was earlier in favour of handing out a one-month ban, which was diluted to 24 hours later.
The matter pertains to the coverage of Pathankot defence areas after a terrorist attack in January this year. The IMC has blamed NDTV India of providing on-air information about ammunition stockpiled in the airbase, fighter-planes, rocket-launchers, fuel-tanks, etc. The committee felt that such crucial information could have been readily picked by up by hostile nations and could have compromised lives of civilians and defence personnel.
The committee has also mentioned that the channel appeared to give out the exact locations of terrorists on air, thus compromising counter offensives by India.
In its reply, the channel said that it was a case of subjective interpretation and most of the information they had put out was already in public domain in print, electronic and social media.
A section of Indian media reacted strongly against such a government move.
“Govt pulling TV news channels off air is a dangerous trend. Don't want sarkari babus deciding what content they like and what they don't,” India Today (TV) and Aaj Tak Managing Editor Rahul Kanwal tweeted.
A former NDTV star and presently with India Today group, Rajdeep Sardesai, said in a series of tweets, “One of India's most sober and responsible channels NDTV India to be banned for a day by I and B ministry. NDTV today, who tomorrow? Media should be accountable, scrutinised, but with transparency and not selectively.”
Shekhar Gupta, former editor of the Indian Express Group and presently anchoring a digital news venture, said in a tweet, “What's shocking is lack of protest/outrage. Reprehensible, somebody in Ind(ia) having power to ban news channels as in Pak(istan). Tom(orrow), it'll be print.”
Meanwhile in an another development, the NBSA (News Broadcasting Standards Authority), the self-regulatory body of news channels under the News Broadcasters’ Association ( NBA) late last month asked NDTV, the English news channel, to air an apology covering for showing an incorrect map of India
The letter from NBA to NDTV stated the complaint was studied and the channel was directed to run an apology (full screen) prior to 9 pm on 5 November.
While NBA refused to comment on this matter, it is learnt that MIB had forwarded to NBSA complaints received by it from people, especially by one person who had taken up this issue on social media in a big way.

9XM to stick to original strategy despite new competition

$

0
MUMBAI: With Viacom18 launching MTV Beats and Channel V re-turning into a music-only channel, 9XM plans to stick to its original strategy of providing curated music clubbed with humour and animation.
9XM will also continue to strengthen its digital and social media presence. For 9XM chief business officer Punit Pandey, the strategy has elicited good response from consumers, viewers and advertisers.
“For the past nine years, our strategy has been to ensure that we are the favourite destination for music consumption. It is great that more players are coming in; it helps the music category to grow. But once the category has grown, the broadcaster can get into the favourite space, make the category robust and provide choices. When you have several choices, you know who will offer you what and that makes it pretty simple,” said Pandey.
While most music channels over the years have added fiction to their programming, 9XM stuck to curating music, which helped them create impact from the brand perspective. 9XM also benefits from regional-language sibling channels such as Jhakaas (Marathi), Jalwa (Hindi) and Tashan (Punjabi).
“All our channels cater only to music. At no point of time did we think of creating shows or reality. Our objective was to create a platform where audience would be coming to consume curated music,” Pandey added.
9XM’s target group is the youth. Pandey points out that the challenge is to be the favourite music destination for the youth. The channel addresses this challenge by providing second-screen experience, especially through social media.
Over the years, the channel has launched various programmes through social media such as ‘9XM Selfiesh’ and #AskTrack. ‘9XM Selfiesh’ offered its viewers to not only request songs but also to get featured on the channel. #AskTrack gave an opportunity to the audience to select a song from a given playlist using social platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook and Twitter. The activities have helped them expand their reach in smaller cities.
“Our target audience is on digital platforms so we interact with them via platforms like Facebook and Twitter. We have launched shows featuring music that our target audience wants to hear. The aim has always been to be their favourite channel,” Pandey said.
Apart from digital, animation and high-quality videos have also helped the channel to attract viewership and advertisers. According to Pandey, advertisers look out for consistency and the channel has been consistent in providing good experience through curation, animation and good video.
“The environment that we provide has helped us emerge as a favourite destination despite the launch of various other channels or their re-conversion into music channels,” he adds.
Despite Pandey’s confidence and the channel’s purportedly strong digital presence, it is going to be tough for 9XM to stay ahead of the curve as more channels enter the music space.

Which are the most attractive TV media brands? Zee TV tops, while MTV is at No 2, and Star Plus, surprisingly is at third spot. Aaj Tak, NDTV, Colors, SAB, Zee News, ABP News, India TV are the rest in the Top in that specific order.
At least that’s the finding of brand intelligence and data insights company, TRA Research, a part of the Comniscient Group, Most Attractive Brands 2016 report.
For Punit Goenka and team Zee there’s many reasons to celebrate. Brand Zee TV has risen 116 places to 93 in the overall list of India’s most attractive brands (as compared to the 2015 ranking), while it ranks number 1 in the Hindi GEC category. Star Plus too has improved drastically by 163 places to rank at 110. But it is placed at No 2 in the Hindi GEC category. Colors which dropped 37 places to rank at 349 overall, is at the third spot in the GEC category.
What’s surprising is that the mired in controversy NDTV has ranked No1 in the most attractive channel cluster category with the Zee Network coming in at No 2 and TV9 at No 3.
Aaj Tak is numero uno in Hindi news, while Zee News ranks second and ABP News is a third spot.
BBC has proved to be the most attractive international news TV brand for 2016, followed by CNN and NBC.
Amongst kids channels, Disney Channel has taken pole position.
This year, LG has unseated Samsung from the top spot and the smartphone maker has slipped to the third rank. LG is followed by Sony in the top 20.
"The survey was conducted in 16 cities across India," said TRA Research CEO N Chandramouli.
Patanjali has emerged right on top in the fast moving consumer coods (FMCG) – diversified sub-category. In the FMCG sector, Baba Ramdev's brand stands at 12, whereas in the overall rankings, it has taken the lead in the chart by 284 ranks to 87th as compared to last year's 371.
Amazon’s aggressive growth over the past year or so has seen it go past popular search engine Google to claim the top spot. In the overall attractive brands chart, Amazon has entered the top 100 club at 96th rank, while Google trails it at 102nd rank. Indian e-commerce portal Flipkart is far behind at 125th, but up from previous year's 346.

West Indies drop Samuels , include Dowrich for tri -series in Zimbabwe

Shane Dowrich, the West Indies wicketkeeper-batsman, received a maiden call-up to the One-Day International (ODI) team for the tri-series in Zimbabwe, also including Sri Lanka, later this month, after his heroics with the bat in the just-concluded third and final Test where he helped his team to a rare away win in Sharjah.
Fast bowler Miguel Cummins has also been drafted into the 15-member squad while the experienced batsman Marlon Samuels and teenage fast bowler Alzarri Joseph were left out. Samuels's luck ran out after a mediocre outing against Pakistan in the Tests. The experienced batsman scored just one half-century, in the first Test, but his second best score on tour was just 30.
Dowrich, who had played eight Tests, wasn't at his best behind the stumps but chipped in with knocks of 47 and unbeaten 60 in the two innings after a top-order collapse on both occasions as West Indies earned a five-wicket consolation win in their last game on the UAE tour.
Senior players Denesh Ramdin and Kieron Pollard too were overlooked for the tri-series which also features Sri Lanka and kicks off on November 14 in Harare.

West Indies squad: Jason Holder (Captain), Carlos Brathwaite, Kraigg Brathwaite, Shane Dowrich, Darren Bravo, Jonathan Carter, Johsnon Charles, Shanon Gabriel, Evin Lewis, Sunil Narine, Ashley Nurse, Sulieman Benn, Miguel Cummins, Shai Hope, Rovman Powell.
