MUMBAI: Giving competition to Discovery Channel, Prashant Chothani-promoted travel and lifestyle channel, travelxp, is all set to take southern India by storm with the launch of its new channel in Tamil. The channel's soft launch is scheduled for 13 December. It's availability on various distribution platforms will be unveiled post its launch.

The aim of the channel is to connect with the regional audience and broaden the audience base that travelxp already enjoys.

Confirming the news with IndianTelevision.com, Chothani said, "We are launching a new channel focussed on the Tamil audience across all age-groups. As south India has vast tourist spots which are famous both, nationally and internationally, with some places that are yet to be explored, our channel will highlight everything -- from food to travel to leisure, etc. and will showcase it to the world. "

The channel will have localised Tamil content as well as dubbed shows from travelxp's existing bouquet. In a year's time, the channel plans to have a 60:40 ratio of acquired/dubbed as to homegrown content.

After launching a Bengali version in April this year, travelxp’s Tamil feed will also explore and travel to new places, finding new cultures and destinations, knowing about different food tastes. The channel's team would shoot different episodes with various families in their own drawing room.

The Bengali feed has a line-up of marquee shows such as Bliss, World Spa, Backpack, Great World Hotels, Strictly Street, xp guide, and Food Fact Fun, etc.

The much awaited 4K rollout of travelxp meantime is also set to launch before it's speculated time in February 2017. The launch will happen across all the markets.

Chothani has invested around US$ 2 million in producing his shows in 4K over the past year or so. Using 4K technology, the shows have already produced 100 hours of travel content in UHD and need another 50 hours of content to launch a full-fledged 4K channel.

The channel has expanded its international footprint by launching in Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Malawi and Rwanda by tying up with Africa’s AzamTV network. The channel is already available in North America, Middle East and the Indian subcontinent.

Travelxp is currently available on DTH platforms -- Tata Sky, Dish TV, Videocon d2h and Airtel, and leading cable networks like Hathway Cable & Datacom, InCable, Siti Cable, GTPL and UCN

No BIS specification yet for interoperable DTH boxes

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) had so far failed to come out with specifications with regard to interoperability of STBs (set-top boxes) meant for DTH (direct-to-home) platforms.

An information and broadcasting ministry source was answering a question by indiantelevision.com in response to a reply in the Parliament given by the minister of state Rajyavardhan Rathore.

The minister had said the ministry had accepted recommendations of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) that it should work with the BIS and the Department of Electronics and IT to ensure such set-top boxes.

TRAI, in July 2014, on “Issues relating to New DTH Licenses” said: “The Open Architecture (Non-proprietary) Set Top Box (STB), which will ensure technical compatibility and effective interoperability among different DTH service providers, shall have such specifications as laid down by the Government from time to time” with “The Set Top Box offered by a DTH service provider shall have such specifications as laid down by the Bureau of Indian Standard (BIS) from time to time.”

TRAI recommended that BIS should come out with updated specifications for STBs from time to time and while doing so, BIS will consult TRAI and that the license conditions should mandate the licensee to comply with the tariff order/scheme prescribed by TRAI for commercial interoperability.

In the paper, the Authority had said that STB interoperability was not possible because of the different technologies adopted by the operators due to them entering the market at different times. TRAI thus asked the BIS to regularly keep updating the standard of STB technology.

Then I&B Minister Prakash Javadekar had told the Parliament on 24 July 2014 that the interoperability of DTH customer premises equipment has not so far proved to be effective due to various techno-economic reasons. The interoperability had been envisaged in the DTH licence conditions, he said.

The portability in DTH service can be achieved through technical interoperability or through commercial interoperability.

Hindi GEC Star Plus’ popular show ‘Ye Hai Mohabbatein’ has completed three years and 1,000 episodes. The cast and crew of ‘Ye Hai Mohabbatein’ came together to celebrate the milestone on 8 December.
The Ekta Kapoor show premiered in December 2013 with Divyanka Tripathi, Anita Hassanandani and Karan Patel in lead roles. The show followed the love story between Ishita (Tripathi), who is Tamil, and Raman Bhalla (Patel), who is Punjabi. Ishita became emotionally attached to Raman’s daughter, Ruhi, who lived with her divorced father. The story then moved into some romance between the two.
The show has been a huge success for Star Plus, being the slot leader and garnering the highest ratings. With two leaps in the storyline and one international trip to Australia, the show is one of TV’s most popular shows.
Talking about the milestone, an ecstatic Tripathi said, “Ishita Bhalla has become a household name now. Starting off as a next-door girl to becoming the pillar of the Bhalla House, the entire journey has been a rollercoaster ride. I have had many look changes from time to time. Jumping off a cliff or actually acting on a wheel chair, going to Australia or fighting with a crocodile in water, I have loved and enjoyed each of my scenes. The show is very special to me as I found my life partner Vivek Dahiya also here. All the cast and set has become like a second home to me. It’s a huge success for all of us, and it’s time to rejoice truly.”

In a move to digitally empower millions of Indians in rural areas and educate them about how to do cashless transactions, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) on Friday launched a TV channel named ‘DigiShala’.

“DigiShala” is a free-to-air channel which is broadcast nationally on DD free-DTH service with a potential viewership of two crore across the country.

To achieve the objective of educating, enabling and informing citizens about cashless economy, the government has also initiated ‘Digi Dhan Abhiyan’.

“DigiShala will enable and empower every citizen of the country, especially farmers, students, Dalits and women in rural areas to learn the usefulness and benefits of digital payment in our everyday life,” Ravi Shankar Prasad, Minister of Electronics and IT, told reporters here while launching the TV channel.
Prasad said that as digital payment increases, the tax base of the nation will also increase. “It will make the whole nation honest as tax will be paid and the country’s GDP will go up,” Prasad added.
On “DigiShala”, citizens will be informed and educated about various digital payment options through step by step demos of digital payments using UPI, USSD, Aadhar-enabled payment systems, e-Wallets and cards.

Linking demonetisation to Digital India, the government intends to boost digital payments through credit and debit cards, internet banking, e-Wallets and mobile apps.

The government is in favour of moving towards an economy where ‘cashless transactions’ outweigh the ‘cash transactions’. In a tweet, Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently urged people to “embrace e-banking, mobile banking and more such technology”.

Whether India was prepared on the cyber security front, Prasad said that the government will take all measures to secure the digital transactions.

The minister said people have already adopted e-commerce to a large extent.
The central government through Nabard will also support ‘Rural Regional Banks’ and ‘Cooperative Banks’ to issue “Rupay Kisan Cards” to 4.32 crore ‘Kisan Credit Card’ holders to enable them to make digital transactions at POS machines, micro ATMs and ATMs.

Moto X Play running Android 7.1 Nougat update spotted on GFXBench

After the Moto G4 and MotoG4 Plus, it appears the next smartphone from Motorola’s kitty to receive Google’s latest Android treat is the Moto X Play. According to a GFXbench leak, the smartphone will skip the Android 7.0 and instead get the updated Android 7.1 Nougat OS soon. This year, Google’s newest Android operating system made its debut on Google’s first self-branded smartphones – the Pixel and Pixel XL – in October. As is the tradition, the update is first rolled out to Nexus or Pixel devices which are made in collaboration with Google with a later rollout for other manufacturers.

When it was launched in India last year at Rs 18,499, the Moto X Play came powered with the older Android 5.1.1 Lollipop version. The smartphone comes with a 5.5-inch full HD IPS display. Under the hood is 1.7GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 processor coupled with Adreno 405 GPU and 2GB RAM. It includes 16GB of internal storage with an option to further take up the storage to 128GB. On the photography front, the smartphone comes with a 21-megapixel rear camera and a 5-megapixel front camera. It is powered by a 3,630mAh battery. If the leaks are to be believed, this might be Motorola’s attempt at quickly bringing the smartphone at par with other handsets receiving the update. The company had announced in October that 15 of its smartphones will be getting the software update in the coming months. While the Moto G4, Moto G4 Plus, Moto Z, and Moto Z Play have already received the update, with the Moto X Play, the company is likely to push forth the updated version of the OS instead of the former version.

Motorola has been usually swift with extending Android updates to its users given that its devices mostly carried the stock version of the operating system. Based on the leaks, the Moto X Play with the Android 7.1 could possibly be the only other-manufacturer device to get the update alongside the Nexus devices. In late November, it was reported that Android Nougat 7.1.1 will start rolling out for Nexus devices from December 6 and the Huawei Nexus 6P will be the first Nexus device to receive the update. ALSO READ: Android Nougat 7.1.1 to start rolling out for Nexus devices from December 6

With the Android 7.1, Google has added more features to make the Android experience sweeter for its users. For emoji lovers, the update brings in 100 new emojis which include 11 new professions available in both genders and various skin tones and ethnicities and new female and male versions of 33 existing emoji. The App Shortcuts, feature similar to the 3D Touch on Apple iOS 9, are back in this update. In Pixel smartphones, the feature is supported by the Pixel Launcher and allows users to have up to five shortcuts.

The power menu has been added with a new restart setting. On Nexus 5X or Nexus 6P, pressing and holding the power button now shows the option of rebooting the device instead of only completely powering off the device. There is a new Moves section in Settings that allows one to set a number of actions based on gestures, for example launching camera by pressing the power button twice or switching between camera modes by double twisting the wrist, and much more. The OS update further adds new Image Keyboard that lets one choose and send stickers, emojis, GIFs, and pictures from Google’s Allo, Hangouts, and Facebook Messenger apps.

One of the major improvements in the Android 7.1 is the new camera app. The app now offers features including white balance, exposure, Automatic Exposure and Automatic Focus locking, and viewfinder grid modes. The Smart Burst mode takes multiple photos and automatically selects the best one. Making the devices running the newest OS more storage efficient, the Smart Storage feature automatically removes old backed-up photos and videos to clear up space.

Chrome Will Soon Label Certain HTTP Sites as Not Secure

Google has been encouraging websites to move to the secure HTTPS protocol for quite some time now. Last year, the search giant started giving preference to the HTTPS pages over HTTP and then announced that the Web crawler will start searching for HTTPS versions of HTTP pages. Now, Google has announced that starting with Chrome 56, the browser will provide warning to the users in a more active way about entering sensitive information on non-secure sites.

Till now, Chrome did not explicitly call HTTP pages as non-secure but with Chrome 56, the browser will provide the pages with the label if they require certain private information from the users, the company said in a blog. "Starting in version 56, Chrome will mark HTTP pages that collect passwords or credit cards as non-secure, as part of a long-term plan to mark all HTTP sites as non-secure," it said.

Apart from the warning about non-secure pages, Chrome 56 beta brings along support for Web Bluetooth. The support for Web Bluetooth allows Web developers to connect with Bluetooth devices such as printers or LED displays with just a few lines of JavaScript.

The beta build of Chrome 56 comes along with support for CSS "position: sticky" command that allows the webpage titles to stick to the top of the screen when user scrolls down. This helps users in figuring out what the topic is about.

Skype's Real-Time Translation Feature Extended to Calls

Skype first showed off its real-time translation feature back in 2014, but at that time it worked only for Skype-to-Skype calls. Now, Skype has expanded this feature to calls made to landline and mobile phones as well.

The feature is still in beta, and to access it users will have to be on the latest beta of the Skype app, and additionally be registered for the Windows Insider Program. This translation feature works just as seamless as normal Skype to Skype calls. Just use the Skype credits (or subscription) to make a normal call on a cell phone or landline, and then open the dialler to switch on the 'Translate' toggle next to the call button.

Once the toggle is switched on, the person on the other end will be played an electronic message with intimation that their call is being recorded as it needs to be translated. Skype informs on its blog that users may face short delays due to time taken to convert of language, and that wearing a headset will significantly improve the Skype Translator calling experience. Also, Skype Translator works on deep learning, so as time goes, and you make more calls, the experience will get better.

Skype Translator supports nine spoken languages like English, Spanish, French, German, Chinese (Mandarin), Italian, Portuguese (Brazilian), Arabic, and Russian. So you'll be able to use the feature only for these languages for now. Recently, Microsoft also introduced the ability to use Skype for Web without the need to sign into the account before starting a conversation.

Dish TV offers 'Digishala' to 15 million subs

Dish TV, India's largest pay digital platform for distribution of television channels, is offering its 15 million subscribers digital education channel Digishala. With the placement of the channel on LCN number 2036, Dish TV became the country’s only pay-DTH provider to offer access to Digishala, government's recently-launched 24x7 TV channel committed to educate the masses on digital payment modes.
In this crucial hour of demonetisation, when businesses, consumers and the common man are battling tough times to stand up to the test of doing cashless transactions, government’s initiative to come up with a channel for the purpose is an innovative and commendable step. Dish TV welcomed the step by placing the channel on its platform.
The channel was placed on Dish TV as soon as it was dedicated to the people by the minister of electronics and IT Ravishankar Prasad and minister of state, electronics & IT P.P. Choudhary.
Digishala is a free to air channel that aims to introduce the use of cashless, paperless and faceless transactions to rural and semi-urban people across villages and small towns.
DishTV, the leader in direct-to-home space in India, had, in 2003, pioneered the introduction of digital modes of revenue collection and, to further harness that, had introduced prepaid cards for its trade partners. As online transactions, credit cards and a cashless society become buzz words today, Dish TV takes pride in having a subscriber base wherein more than 40% of its customers do online recharge transactions. As far as B2B transactions are concerned, DishTV have them all as cashless.
